T-Shirt Theatre
T-Shirt Theatre is the flagship program of the Alliance of Drama Education, ADE, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit co-founded in 1985 by the late Walt Dulaney and current Executive Director George Kon. The community of practice works twice weekly afterschool 11 months a year with teen playwrights and performers at Farrington HS which is located in Kalihi, one of Hawaii’s most vibrant communities where recent immigrants, working class locals and military transplants meet at the edge of urban Honolulu. TST trains Farrington youth to write, produce and perform original dramatic works based on their lives. The company’s innovative devised theatre process combines writing workshops and training in dramatic arts to provide students with a safe space to share and understand each other’s stories. Through collaborative teaching methods, TST underscores that risk and resiliency are features of writing and performing honest, compelling pieces as much as they are key skills for successful, adult lives. TST’s creative work, expressed in a collection of short stories, are woven around a theme that helps students “rehearse for life.” During this global health crisis, TST’s work has pivoted online and it’s presence in Kalihi is needed more than ever.
Gett!ng Dramat!c Drama Education Residencies
English chair, Sherilyn Tom liked the audience training aspect of the work so much that she contracted ADE to work with the entire incoming class, 24 sections. Farrington could not host assemblies in their 1250 seat auditorium because students were too rowdy. Once students performed their Romeo & Juliet monologues in the fun and fright of the solo spotlight, they had earned empathy for the guts it takes to perform for peers. Within a few years auditorium doors could reopen. Since 1982, ADE has helped students express themselves and earn empathy for others thru 5 to 10 day fee for service Gett!ng Dramat!c drama education residencies across Oahu, Hawaii.
