Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Assistance Dogs of Hawaii is committed to graduating quality Assistance Dog Teams that allow both the dogs and their partners to reach their full potential. We are committed to helping those in need through our Community Outreach Program and developing the untapped potential that dogs have to help people through our Medical Scent Detection Program. Our long-term goal is to increase the scope of our programs and positively impact as many people with disabilities and other special needs as possible.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Assistance Dogs of Hawaii partners with many agencies in our community and works closely with the people we serve to determine needs and help formulate our goals. We consider the depth as well as the breadth of impact and collectively strive for greatness when considering programs and services. Additionally, we examine feedback from recipients of our services, their families, and the people impacted via follow-up visits, reports, surveys and numerous unsolicited testimonials. We use this information to determine where our Assistance Dogs will do the most good and have the most positive and life-changing impact. We focus our efforts in these areas as well conducting new research that develops the potential that dogs have to help people in need.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
ADH has a dedicated team of professional staff members, including trainers with graduate degrees in psychology, occupational therapy, animal behavior and medicine. The innovative training methods developed at ADH have gained international recognition. As a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International, we have access to extensive information about industry trends, advances, and opportunities. ADH trainers attend annual conferences and have the opportunity to collaborate with other Assistance Dog organizations across the nation. ADH has an intern program where information is shared and ideas are developed to help assist the people we serve.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have created a best practices model for training Assistance Dogs for people with physical disabilities and other special needs. Our Assistance Dog Program touches the lives of over 1,000 people per year and our Community Outreach Program benefits over 10,000 people with special needs per year. Our Medical Scent Detection Program has conducted groundbreaking research that has been published in leading medical journals
