Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The goal of the Global Soap Project is to recycled discarded soap, mostly from hotels, recycle it into new bars, and then get the new soap and hygiene education to people who lack access to it worldwide. Specifically, in 2013, our goal is to recycle 250,000 pounds of soap, produce 1 million new bars, and distribute them to at least 100,000 people.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
To achieve our goals, we partner with hotels and global health organizations, allowing us to simultaneously increase our reach while keeping our costs low. We partner with hotels to divert their used soap from landfills, providing us a supply that we turn into new bars. We then partner with leading global health organizations to identify populations most at risk of illness/death due to lack of soap use, then design interventions based on the needs of the individual populations to ensure they always have access to soap at the end of the long-term program -- without being dependent on us for free soap, and also while supporting local economies.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We leverage our expertise in soap recycling to produce the end product. We also leverage our partnerships to allow us to efficiently and effectively reach people in need and ensure they have the resources necessary to achieve long-term success.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 2009, we've grown from a network of just 50 hotels, to a global operation spanning the globe. We've not only increased our outputs significantly -- we've also worked to identify interventions that yield the most success, allowing us to build more effective programs going forward. Finally, we've heard powerful stories -- and seen impressive numbers -- showing that handwashing with soap truly does improve health and save lives, reducing incidences of illness and death in the communities we serve while also positioning the populations for long-term soap use to sustain the impact for years to come.
