Participants in GuideStar Survey on Nonprofit Fundraising by Direct Mail

General

In our September 2001 newsletter to GuideStar participants, we invited nonprofits to take our survey on fundraising by direct mail. Organizations participate in GuideStar by registering and completing an online questionnaire. The information provided in the questionnaire is incorporated into the nonprofits' GuideStar Report. There is no cost to the organizations for registering and completing the questionnaire.

At the time the survey invitation was issued, only 501(c)(3) organizations (i.e., public charities and private foundations) were included in the GuideStar database and thus eligible to participate in GuideStar. In the weeks since the newsletter was sent, we have started expanding the database to include all 501(c) nonprofit organizations that are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. All of these organizations are invited to participate in GuideStar.

Organization Size

As the chart above indicates, individuals from nonprofits of all sizes participated in GuideStar's survey on fundraising by direct mail.

Missions

Organizations working in the areas of education; housing and shelter; and health—general and rehabilitative were most heavily represented in the survey. (Because participants could select more than one subject area in which their organizations worked, we did not calculate percentages for these results.) As the chart below shows, however, 24 of the 26 major NTEE (National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities) subject areas were represented in the survey.
