The LGBT Movement is a social justice movement in which lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and their straight allies work to bring about equity and well-being to LGBT individuals in various capacities all over the world. Experts working in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) sector were asked recommend up to three nonprofit making a significant contribution at the local level. Experts were encouraged to consider a range of nonprofits including those working in policy and advocacy, research, public education, legal support, health and human services, community centers, social organizations, and more. Nonprofits recommended cover a wide range of issue areas within the cause including health, marriage and family recognition, youth, elder support, transgender equality, anti-discrimination, and racial and economic justice.

Philanthropedia surveyed 110 experts in the LGBT sector (with an average of 13 years of work experience in the field) to identify those organizations that were making the biggest impact. These experts (funders, researchers, nonprofit senior staff, government officials, etc.) identified 19 outstanding nonprofits (out of 80 total reviewed nonprofits) working at the national level in the LGBT sector.
