  1. How fresh is the information that serves as the foundation for CEO Compensation Checkpoint report?

The CEO Compensation Checkpoint report requires that 2008 Form 990 data be available for the target organization as well its potential peers. As 2009 Form 990 information becomes increasingly available, it will be loaded into the analysis where possible.

  2. Why are certain types of nonprofits not eligible for CEO Compensation Checkpoint Report?

At this time, we only have enough digitized compensation data and possible peer organizations for 501(c)(3) private charities and 501(c)(4), (c)(5), (c)(6), and (c)(9) organizations. In the future, we may be able to expand the compensation data to include private foundations and other categories of tax-exempt organizations.

  3. What is an NTEE code?

The National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities classification system categorizes similar nonprofits according to purpose, type, or major function. Developed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) at the Urban Institute, the NTEE system's hierarchical coding structure provides a standardized language for describing the vast range of nonprofit organizations.

  4. Why doesn't my organization's Employer Identification Number (EIN) have a pre-assigned NTEE code?

The IRS did not begin assigning NTEE codes to tax-exempt organizations until the late 1990s. Although an effort has been made to apply a code to most organizations that existed before the official adoption of the NTEE system, that effort is incomplete. The majority of organizations in the GuideStar database do have NTEE codes assigned to them.

  5. Where do the suggested alternate NTEE codes come from?

From nonprofits that provide information to GuideStar through the GuideStar Exchange. Organizations participating in the GuideStar Exchange may provide up to three NTEE codes that best represent their areas of focus. Learn more about the GuideStar Exchange

  6. How does GuideStar determine which organizations are contained in the list of possible peers for my organization?

The initial peer list is drawn exclusively from information generated by the IRS or provided to the IRS by the organizations in the list. It is based on two factors: revenue, as reported on IRS Form 990, and NTEE code, as assigned to organizations by the IRS. Organizations must have data available for three years from fiscal years 2006, 2007, or 2008 in order to be included in the initial peer list.

  7. How can I view potential peers based on location?

You may refine your initial peer list by city and state using the category refinement tools at the top of the peer selection page (step three).

  8. How can I change the organizations in my peer list?

Simply use the Add button to add a single organization. Use the Add All This Page button to add all organizations displaying on the page to your peer list.

To remove an organization from your peer list, click the Remove button beside its name.
