Advanced Search

Did you know that as a GuideStar Premium subscriber, you can search our database by Employer Identification Number (EIN), or limit your searches to a specific state or states, metropolitan statistical area (MSA), IRS subsection code, or income range? Well, you can, just by using GuideStar Premium's advanced nonprofit search.

You can navigate to the advanced nonprofit search page from the link in the center of the home page or the link at the top of most of the pages on our site.

Advanced Nonprofit Search Fields

The advanced nonprofit search offers 13 fields that allow you to craft precise searches:

  • Keyword
  • Organization Name
  • City
  • GuideStar Premium zip code searchState. State is a multi-select field, that is, you can choose more than one state for your search. To select two or more states, hold the Control key and click on the states you want to include in your search.
  • Zip Code. You can search a specific zip code or a radius of 5, 10, 25, or 50 miles from a specific zip code; click the arrow on the box to the right of the zip code field to get a drop-down menu with these options.
  • Metropolitan Statistical Area, or MSA. Click the arrow to get a drop-down menu of MSAs. MSA is another multi-select field; hold down the Control key and click on the MSAs you want to include in your search.
  • GuideStar Premium affiliation searchAffiliation and Location Types. You can choose from parent organizations, subordinate organizations, independent organizations, or national headquarters. Click on the FAQ links to learn more about these different types of organizations.
  • Employer Identification Number, or EIN
  • Categories. Hold the Control key to select more than one category.
  • National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities, or NTEE, Code. NTEE codes classify nonprofits by mission. Click the link above the NTEE code field to see a list of NTEE codes.
  • IRS Subsection. Most people think of charities when they hear the word nonprofit, but there are several other types of tax-exempt organizations as well; click the “About subsection codes” link to see a list. IRS Subsection is another field where you can choose more than one option by holding down the Control key.
  • Income. You can restrict your search to a single income range or choose multiple ranges by holding down the Control key.
