WATER TO THRIVE
Build Wells, Change Lives
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
There are almost one billion people in the world that do not have daily access to clean safe water. The impact is far reaching....depriving them of health, education, income security and safety because of the burden of gathering water. Women and young girls are affected the most severely, often walking miles to gather unsafe water for their family. Our completely projects typically provide clean water to 300-500 beneficiaries who are within a 15-20 minute walk. Clean water is the gateway to breaking the cycle of poverty for these communities.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Clean Water for Africa
Since 2008, Water to Thrive has funded over 1,800 wells providing water for over 800,000 people in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. Our vision is to fund another 500 wells providing clean, safe drinking water for a total of 1 million people.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Water to Thrive transforms lives in rural East Africa by working with partners and beneficiaries to bring the blessing of clean, safe water, connecting communities in need with supporters who have the heart and spirit to make a difference.
For efficiency, we work with valued partners in each of our countries to connect with the communities we serve. We typically implement 120-140 new water projects each year, benefitting over 50,000 community members.
Our partners engage the local communities in the implementation, providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) training for all community members.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1. We develop strategic partnerships with our implementing NGO partners in each country. We insure that we are aligned on our values and the best practices for WASH programs. These are long-term relationships and we play a key part in developing their capacity for growth.
2. We operate with a "100% Promise" for our water donors, i.e., when a gift is made for water, we insure that 100% of that gift goes directly to the field work of our partners to implement projects. We raise operations monies separately, in fact, we have two separate bank accounts, one for water programs, one for operating expenses.
3. Over the years, we have developed a loyal army of supporters......individuals, families. churches, schools, Rotary Clubs, companies, etc....... who provide donations to fund the water projects and operations. When a donor funds a water project, they know the village name, number of beneficiaries and GPS coordinate of their project. They also receive updates on it progress as well as a completion report and completion pictures that can be shared with anyone who supported the project.
4. We endeavor to operate as efficiently as possible. We try not to do anything ourselves that others can do better. We run a lean organization, with over 75% of our annual budget going directly to our programs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
1. Our implementing partners are the lynch pin to our execution strategy in the field. While we have resources to provide oversight and monitoring, the on-the-ground implementation work is executed by our 8 implementing partners. On average, they have worked with us in partnership for over 7 years.
2. Our dedicated staff are key to nurturing and growing our donor base. Over 80% of our annual donations come from repeat relationships.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Water to Thrive has been operating for 15 years as of 2023. During that time, we have completed over 1,800 water projects, benefitting over 800,000 community members. We operate in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda.
Our near term goals are to reach 2,000 total projects, serving 1,000,000 community members in the next two years (2026).

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
