What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life changes dramatically. Doctors and nurses provide the medical care; however, families need additional support. That is where the Kids Cancer Foundation and our support programs and services are an enormous help to both the patient and the entire family. The Kids Cancer Foundation provides compassionate, easily accessible supportive care services. We educate families about their child's diagnosis and treatment as well as provide the physical, emotional and financial support these children and families need throughout this difficult journey. We work collaboratively with the medical team and coordinate local, state and national resources to ensure the needs of our young patients and families are met.\n This coordination of education and support is critical, as it has been shown to increase both a child's quality of life and overall chance for survival.

This program was started when we became aware of the difficulty our young patients had transitioning back to school after undergoing treatment. We have a volunteer Child Advocate Attorney who assists families in making this transition a little easier. She reaches out to the child’s school and sets up a meeting where the teacher and the parents have an opportunity to discuss how best to transition this child back into the classroom. She advocates on behalf of the child to ensure appropriate accommodations and testing is done to meet the specific needs of the child.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

What are we aiming to accomplish? The long term strategic goal of the Kids Cancer Foundation (KCF) is to provide hope and support to children and families battling childhood cancer and/or blood disorders. We accomplish this by providing the child and family with continuing education regarding their diagnosis and treatment along with providing them with the physical, emotional, financial and spiritual support they will need throughout their journey.

What are our strategies for making this happen? The Kids Cancer Foundation (KCF) works collaboratively with the medical team to meet the unique needs of both the child and the family and coordinates local, state and national resources to meet those needs. Basically, the KCF helps them navigate their way throught the healthcare system so they can focus their attention on making their child well. This coordination of care has been shown to not only improve the childs quality of life but also their overall chance of survival.

What are our organizations capabilites for doing this? The Kids Cancer Foundation (KCF) has the dedication, knowledge and resources to assist families during this difficult time and the Foundation actively advocates for the children and their families throughout treatment and beyond. The KCF has assisted hundreds of local children and families through its 8 unique programs and services and has secured hundreds of thousands in financial assistance. Without the continued support of our various grants and generous donors none of this would be possible.

What have and haven't we accomplished so far? The Kids Cancer Foundation (KCF) worked tirelessly in our first ten years to establish the Kids Cancer Center (KCC). The KCC provides state-of-the-art supportive care services to children and families battling childhood cancer and/or blood disorders in our community. KCF is committed to providing these services for a lifetime. The Centers mulitidisciplinary team provides physical, emotional, financial and spiritual support to patients and their families. Center staff optimize patient outcomes by working cooperatively and collaboratively with physicians, hospitals and other community foundations, groups and organizations to coordinate and provide seamless comprehensive services. The Center provides supportive care services in one convenient location making it more efficient than having patients travel to multiple locations as was previously done. Having these services in a central location makes it easier, faster and less stressful for patients and families so they readily utilize the programs and services available. The KCF has assisted over 500 children and families and we are proud of the support and impact we have had on our young patients and families, but our work is not done. Our commitment to children and families battling childhood cancer and/or blood disorders is not for a day, week, month or year, it's a promise of a lifetime of support. In order to keep this promise, the goal of the KCF is to fully endow the Foundation so it will be there for generations to come. Currently the annual operating expenses are $603,000. The KCF has initiated a Founders Campaign asking donors to make a pledge to give a specified amount to the Foundation annually and a portion of those donations goes towards endowment to secure the future of the Foundation. The Foundation is also launching a $2.5 million dollar capital campaign to purchase their own building to house the Kids Cancer Center.
