What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Undergraduate degree program

At the heart of Bennington’s progressive educational model is The Plan, a personalized course of study developed by each student under the guidance of faculty advisors. Absent traditional majors or general education requirements, students’ Plans are often interdisciplinary in nature, exemplifying individualized education at its best.
Alongside the Plan, work-integrated learning is an integral part of a Bennington education. During the College’s annual Field Work Term, all students work full-time for six weeks with an organization or institution of their choosing to apply what they have learned on campus and to focus their studies.

Bennington was the first liberal arts college in the country to include the visual and performing arts as equal partners to the humanities. The College has a history of equipping undergraduates with the capacities to understand and confront the urgent social, political, and environmental issues of our time, often through the lens of the arts.

Bennington College offers several graduate programs, including the MFA in Dance, MFA in Music, MFA in Public Action, and MFA in Writing and Literature. Bennington’s graduate programs are built on the belief that making new work is at the heart of the educational process. The College’s graduate programs are small, intensive, and highly selective. They are best suited for students who have a strong sense of what they want from graduate work and know how to assume responsibility for the design of their education.

The Bennington College Prison Education Initiative (PEI) brings Bennington’s renowned faculty and undergraduate curriculum to inmates at Great Meadow Correctional Facility, a maximum security men’s prison in Comstock, New York. Among prison college programs, PEI is unique in its commitment to developing a continuing education program for students who are serving life or virtual life sentences. PEI creates opportunities for success, and improves the intellectual and spiritual lives of some of the most marginalized in our society.

PEI offers courses in literature, philosophy, social research, history of thought, architecture, political theory, social psychology, math, computer programming, drawing, Latin, and U.S. and world history. Taught by Bennington faculty, these courses are identical in rigor, subject, and structure to classes offered on Bennington’s campus. PEI awards the Associate of Arts degree to its students.
