What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Longy offers three major areas of musical study: Conservatory, Preparatory Studies and Continuing Studies. In the fall of 2007, the Conservatory enrolled 223 students from 37 states and 31 countries, including 52 undergraduates and 171 graduate students. These students enjoy a rare opportunity to work as colleagues-in-training with Longy's gifted faculty, a group of 142 artist-teachers. Excellence, rigor, support and collaboration are hallmarks of the Longy Conservatory education, and many recent graduates have gone directly into the ranks of major performing organizations worldwide. The Conservatory offers the following programs of study: Master of Music Degree, Graduate Performance Diploma, Artist Diploma, Dalcroze Certificate and License, Undergraduate Diploma, and Bachelor of Music Degree (with Emerson College). Majors are offered in chamber music, collaborative piano, composition, Dalcroze eurhythmics, early music, modern American music, opera, organ, piano, strings, vocal performance, woodwinds and brass. Preparatory Studies currently serves more than 700 children (ages 12 months to 18 years), and Continuing Studies has an enrollment of 230 adults, ranging from serious beginners to professionals continuing their music education. Students in these programs receive lesson and course instruction in a variety of instruments, voice, and theory and composition; also available are chamber music ensembles, choral and orchestral studies. We provide scholarships to economically disadvantaged children to pursue musical studies at Longy. We also provide outreach programs that bring music to public schools in the Greater Boston region.
