Collecting & Preserving LGBTQ+ History

Founded in 1980, The History Project (THP) in Boston is one of the oldest LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and more) community archives in the country. With over 250 collections documenting queer life dating back to the early 20th century, THP preserves stories of queer experiences that are otherwise minimized, erased, or forgotten, through donations from the community of archival collections, publications, and oral histories.

Population(s) Served

THP works with researchers, students, journalists, and community members to explore LGBTQ+ history in our archives in Copley Square. In 2023 alone, we’ve worked with 23 researchers on requests ranging from college assignments to public history projects and exhibits, and even one request for a personal ad the researcher wrote back in 1989! THP’s work isn’t just about history, it’s about creating context for the issues affecting our community today and sharing inspiration from our past. Requests for information about Boston’s past, like our participation in the 1977 orange boycott against Anita Bryant’s Save Our Children campaign, inform current scholarship and journalism.

Population(s) Served

THP also shares the history of New England’s LGBTQ+ community through public events and collaborations. Each year, THP holds over 20 free public programs featuring community groups, historians, archivists, genealogists, park rangers, and others. Since 2020, all of our virtual events have been recorded and are available on our free YouTube channel. In the last few months, we’ve hosted scholars of lesbian and trans history, collaborated with the Wicked Queer film festival and Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, and hosted a queer historic book club and Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon. As Pride Month nears, we’re looking forward to hosting an LGBTQ+ community picnic, an author talk, and two events on the history of LGBTQ+ politics and politicians with the Massachusetts Historical Society.
