Mission

Safe Haven's multi-faceted mission is to provide vital  programs for young people, often isolated due to the prejudice and stigma still surrounding AIDS. Through camps, educational outreach, and global partnerships, and other  activities young people gain a new connection - in a world where few try to understand them, Safe Haven cares and understands. Safe Haven also travels the US presenting at schools and conferences via our SPEAKOUT program. In 1998 - 2009, Safe Haven spoke in front of well over 90,000 teens. We have planned an additional 20 presentations in summer, 2010 as well as a  camp for young people with HIV and AIDS in Mass. in April, 2010 and another in Arden NC in August 2010

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

SAFE HAVEN PROJECT PROGRAMS INCLUDE:
1- "The Vineyard Project Camp" Each April for 15 years, held on Martha's Vineyard Island
2- "Camp Safe Haven, North Carolina"
3- SPEAKOUT - traveling speakers program which included HIV positive speakers who share on life with HIV. Other speakers include Safe Haven representatives who share on the power of the individual to create change in their world.
4- The Ghana Education and Outreach Tours
Held each year in Ghana, West Africa. This educational and outreach program provides sorely needed education to young people and elders throughout the nation, as well as outreach to those living with HIV.

6-Camp Safe Haven Retreat - August, Annually, North Carolina. A pilot program for young people with HIV in the NC area.

Camp Safe Haven, Martha's Vineyard - April 17 - 24, 2010
Our sixteenth year.

40 young people with HIV invited for a week of camaraderie and compassion on the beautiful and welcoming island of Martha's Vineyard.

25 Volunteer Counselors age 18+ fully trained - spend the entire week in a family style environment unique to Camp Safe Haven

Dozens of members of the local island community participate in providing fun and interesting activities for the campers. For many campers this is the first time they have been accepted by a community in spite of living with HIV. (For many, stigma and prejudice are still a major issue.
