What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) addresses issues related to civil rights, misrepresentation in the media, school bullying and educating non-Sikhs.

In regards to civil rights, Sikh's have experienced workplace discrimination and have been the victims of hate crimes. Sikh's also do know their rights when traveling and in the past have been forced to remove their turbans.

SALDEF also watches the media and makes sure the representation of Sikh remain true and accurate.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

SALDEF's main goals are to ensure all Sikh's know their rights, Sikhs are represented accurately in the media and that Americans as a whole have a better understanding of who Sikhs are.

SALDEF has a few campaigns that address our goals including Know Your Rights, LEPP training, SikhVOTE, SikhLEAD, and media relations.

SALDEF holds Know Your Rights forums across the US to teach Sikhs about their rights when traveling, at work, in school, and in day-to-day life. These forums address issues at a community level.

The Law Enforcement Partnership Program (LEPP) trains local and federal law enforcement about Sikhs. These trainings teach law enforcement on Sikh culture and how to interact with Sikhs and in their places of worship.

SikhVOTE registers voters and educates voters on how, when and where to vote. SikhVOTE's main focus is to make Sikhs active participants in there government so they have a voice in their local and federal politics.

SikhLEAD develops young Sikh leaders that will continue the work of SALDEF and ensure a brighter future for all Sikh Americans.

SALDEF was started as a media watchdog and continues the tradition of tracking media mentions on Sikhs Americans - making sure representation is truthful and abundant.

SALDEF has a great staff that is dedicated to the mission. We are also expanding our fundraising from individual donors to grants and foundations.

SALDEF has hosted 20 Know your Rights Forums on the past year, organized a SikhVOTE campaign in 2017, placed 14 Sikhlead Interns, trained 18 LDP young leaders and help many LEPP trainings.

In 2018 SALDEF has already begun enrollment for the SikhLEAD 2018, hosted Know Your Rights Forums, held LEPP trainings and plans to do more community outreach and voter registration.
