Preserving the Bond Between Parents and Children
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
National Parents Organization (NPO) is a child-focused, research-based organization whose overarching goal is to promote shared parenting by educating parents, divorce professionals, and legislators and by reforming family courts and laws in every state. We envision a society where: -Shared parenting after separation or divorce is the norm; -Children’s natural right to be nurtured & guided by both parents is fully honored; -Society treats fathers & mothers as equally important to the well-being of their children; -Children are happier & more successful because their loving bonds to their parents are protected after parental separation or divorce; and, -The courts arrange finances after separation or divorce so that both mothers & fathers can afford to house and care for their children & themselves.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Public Awareness
-Public Polling: NPO has commissioned polling in 25 states showing the overwhelming support for shared parenting and is working to commission polls in every state. These polls are used by our volunteers to show legislators that, not only is shared parenting backed by research, it is also extremely popular.
-Shared Parenting Day: NPO is working to establish April 26 as Shared Parenting Day in cities and states around the country to commemorate the day that Kentucky’s first in the nation equal shared parenting law went into effect. Shared Parenting Day raises awareness of the need for reform and brings the issue to legislators’ notice.
-Billboard: Through a generous donation, NPO was able to put up a billboard in Raleigh, North Carolina, raising awareness of the state’s D+ grade on the Shared Parenting Report Card and showing the need to change laws. We are now working on getting more billboards up around the country.
Family Court Reform
-Chapters in 28 states work to change laws and court rules to promote shared parenting.
Worked with groups in West Virginia, including West Virginia NPO, to pass an equal shared parenting law in 2022.
-Assisted Arkansas Advocates for Parental Equality in their win in getting an equal shared parenting law passed in Arkansas in 2021.
-NPO spurred the Kentucky legislature to pass the strongest equal shared parenting laws in the country. In 2017, the Kentucky legislature passed, and the Governor signed into law, a presumption of equal parenting for temporary orders. The following year, the legislature overwhelmingly passed, and the Governor signed, a bill creating a presumption of equal parenting time for permanent orders.
-In 2018, the Virginia legislature unanimously passed an NPO-backed bill that created the first pro-shared parenting law in the state, requiring courts to consider shared physical custody along with sole custody arrangements.
Research
-2014 & 2019 Shared Parenting Report Card: These reports examine the degree to which all 50 state legislatures have absorbed and acted on the scientific consensus on the benefits of shared parenting.
-2022 Child Support and Shared Parenting Report Card: In this first of its kind study, NPO has examined in detail the child support guidelines of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, grading them on the degree to which they encourage and facilitate shared parenting.
-2017 Shared Parenting Conference: In partnership with the International Council on Shared Parenting, NPO organized & sponsored the most significant conference on child well-being and separated parenting.
-NPO Ohio Parenting Time Report: This study examined the default parenting time schedules in each of Ohio’s 88 counties and uncovered extreme variations in these rules and led to changes in eight counties.
