What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

When a child or teenager is diagnosed with cancer, trips to the hospital and exhausting treatment regimens instantly become the new routine. Isolated from school, siblings and friends; facing a changing physical appearance; and unable to participate in their usual activities, it is easy for a child to lose their smile and identity to the disease. The Flashes of Hope in-hospital, photo shoots focus on the child, putting cancer in the background; create a bright spot in an otherwise dark time; and provide families with an enduring image of their child’s beauty, strength and unique story. For too many families, though, the portrait is the last one they have of their child. Cancer is the leading disease killer of children, yet pediatric cancer receives only 4% of federal funding for research. In 2009, Flashes of Hope began funding research, giving families hope for the future.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Flashes of Hope strives to give SMILES and HOPE to children and families battling pediatric cancer.

Our goals are:
-To restore a sense of self and improve the self-esteem of pediatric cancer patients;
-To bring comfort and distraction to hospitalized children and their families through carefully chosen gifts;
-To provide families with an enduring image of their child's beauty, strength and unique story;
-To fund critically needed research in pediatric cancer treatment for improved health outcomes.

Flashes of Hope carries out our mission of giving SMILES and HOPE to children and families battling pediatric cancer through the following key strategies:

-Volunteer driven/Chapter model- Our photography program is built around a network of trained and dedicated volunteers across 50 cities, creating a national footprint. Chapter directors manage monthly photo shoots using a team of professional photographers and stylists.

-Partnerships with Hospitals and Camps- We meet children and families where they are receiving treatment, in hospitals and special events for pediatric cancer patients, creating opportunities for direct delivery of gifts and services. Our strong relationships with Child Life Specialists and social workers in partner hospitals encourages patient participation and helps inform comfort and entertainment gift selections.

-Events- Our premier fundraising events in Cleveland, OH engage local professional athletes and business leaders, showcase past photography participants and build a community of support to raise funds for the photography program and pediatric cancer research.

-Partnerships with pediatric cancer research funders- We partner with respected national organizations to identify the most promising research projects and clinical trials across the country. This allows researchers to spend more time making discoveries in the lab and less time submitting grant requests. Every one of our partners shares our values and our mission to accelerate a cure by investing in life saving research.

Flashes of Hope was founded by Allison and Kip Clarke during their 18 month-old son's first battle with cancer. In 2001, they gathered the first team of award-winning photographers and stylists to give a handful of young cancer patients a chance to celebrate their beauty, strength and dignity through stunning photographic portraits. Since then, Flashes of Hope has partnered with over 70 pediatric hospitals nationwide, presenting free photo packages to over 75,000 young patients and their families and has funded over $6 million in pediatric cancer studies. This steady growth was fueled initially by the co-founders’ personal story and professional careers in media and finance but has expanded to include nine paid staff and a network of over 1,000 volunteers nationwide. Our volunteers include trained and dedicated chapter directors, as well as, professional photographers and stylists. We have forged and maintain strong relationships with hospitals, child life specialists, and camps for pediatric cancer patients, allowing us continued access to our target population. We also benefit from an active and engaged board who have lent their time, expertise and networks to grow and sustain our organization. We have partnered with other similar mission driven organizations who fund pediatric cancer research to expedite access to research support. We are a nimble, thoughtful yet bold organization focused on providing simple tangible items- a photo, a gift and research dollars, that have a profound intangible impact -SMILES and HOPE.

Since 2001, Flashes of Hope has photographed over 75,000 children battling cancer, giving them and their families enduring images of their beauty, strength and unique stories. With our first photo shoot in Cleveland, Ohio, we have expanded to hosting free, monthly events in 50 cities and 70 children’s hospitals, nationwide. Families indicate through survey data that participating in a Flashes of Hope program event has brought joy to them during a very difficult time; was a meaningful documentation of their child’s journey; and boosted the self-esteem and reinforced the identity of their child despite their changing appearance.

As we recognized that for some families the portraits were the last ones they had of their child, we began funding critically needed research to provide improved health outcomes for pediatric cancer patients. Since 2009, we have raised over $6 million for research support.

Looking forward, we are focused on the following:
- Growing the number of participants in the photography program.
- Expanding the participant’s experience by providing meaningful gifts for comfort and entertainment.
- Growing our community of support in each chapter location through corporate sponsorships and grants.
- Increasing our funding of pediatric cancer research.
