What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Community Based Mentoring

This is our traditional program where a child is matched with an adult volunteer mentor. Matches are made after an interview with the child and with his/her parent or guardian. Volunteers are interviewed, attend training and are thoroughly background checked before being accepted as a Big Brother or Sister. Enrollment and Match specialists find the right people for one another based on geography and, more importantly, similar interests. From there, a Match Support Specialist is assigned to the pair. It is her job to keep in communication with the Big, the Little and the Parent/Guardian to be certain that the goals set for the match are attained.

Population(s) Served

High achieving high school students are matched in afterschool programs in 3 New Haven Elementary Schools. The matches meet weekly for 2 hours under the supervision of a BBBS case manager. The first hour is typically devoted to homework. For the remaining time the matches engage in activities planned for them by our staff. These programs are increasingly popular with both the younger and the high school students.
