Mission

In the wake of the recent breakup of Yugoslavia and the brutal war in Bosnia, the post-Yugoslav societies are at a crossroads. For a lasting, and meaningful peace, reconciliation is necessary and requires much cooperation and communication between people that now belong to different or new nations. RACCOON finds avenues to fostering reconciliation, with the ultimate goal of building a civil society. The programs will seek to increase the use of culturally and sensitive models for conflict. In USA, exiles, immigrants and refugees from areas of seemingly intractable conflict and oppression play important roles as keepers of the "memories" and "maps" that chart their historic grievances and aspirations. RACCOON is helping some to increase knowledge of conflict resolution alternatives among their own communities in conflict so they can play positive and effective roles in resolving conflicts here and abroad.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Space(http://balkansnet.org/prostor.html) The idea is to create a community space for post-Yugoslavs willing to participate in programs that reach across ethnic lines. The Space currently offers the following programs: counseling service, domestic violence workshop, writing workshop, art therapy for kids, film evenings, yoga classes. Snowboard Peace Camp / Bosnia(http://balkansnet.org/snow/) This is an outline of an alternative idea that combines a conflict reconciliation program with participation in an "extreme" sport activity in order to reach to constituency that does not respond well to traditional conflict reconciliation techniques. Cyber-Yugo(http://balkansnet.org/cyberyugo.html) Raccoon wants to utilize the shell of a Yugo car for a Cyber experience of the post-yugoslav societies. A computer system would be the "engine," for the Cyber Yugo. A detailed geographic map would be virtually navigated with this Yugo. Project Nada(?http://balkansnet.org/nada.html?) Reaching to the victims of double traumatization - due to September 11 tragedy. Women In Black(http://womeninblack.net) Vigil in NYC To raise awareness in the trend-setting apple of the world, the Women In Black stand their silent vigil in front of the New York Central Public Library on 42nd street and 5th last Wednesday every month at 7:30 pm. Indira Kajosevic coordinates the outreach for this project. The Balkans Pages(http://balkansnet.org) Over the past four years The Balkans Pages were one of the most extensive and reliable resources for the information on anything post-Yugoslav: links, newsgroups, chats, lists, maps, opinions, statistics, pictures, sounds, politics, culture and commentary. Zamir Chat(http://balkansnet.org/listserv.html) Post-Yugoslav discussion list, a heir to the Sarajevo Pipeline project which provided the communication lifeline out of the besieged city during the war is a place to learn and build tolerance for differing opinions about the causes and effects of the Balkan conflicts. English is the language most often used, making this list a debating place for both natives and non-natives of post-Yugoslav societies scattered around the globe. This list is an ongoing project moderated by Ed Agro.
