What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

General Program

General Program consists of weekly drop in classes both at the center and branch locations located throughout CT. These classes typically last between 1 and 1.5 hours (with the exception of lunchtime meditations which are 30 minutes in duration). Each class includes guided meditations, practical advice from Buddha’s teachings and methods to carry insight and inner peace into daily modern life. Classes focus on topics such as the Art of Meditation, Developing Acceptance, Letting Go of the Past and Advice for Anxious Times.

Population(s) Served

Foundation Program is a structured study program that meets weekly for at least two hours during which time the chosen text is studied in depth. There is systematic study of key Buddhist texts in order to gain a deep and lasting understanding of the teachings in order to gain experience of the spiritual path. The Foundation Program is an opportunity for deeper study and practice of Buddha’s teachings in the modern world. Through study and contemplation, engaging in meditations and group discussions, students increase their wisdom, compassion and meditation experience.

Population(s) Served

The Teacher Training Program provides an extensive presentation of particular subjects of Mahayana Buddhism to enable practitioners to deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddhism, and to train as qualified New Kadampa Tradition Teachers. The program comprises twelve subjects, based on Buddha’s Sutra and Tantra teachings and the corresponding commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. In addition to completing the study of fourteen texts of Sutra and Tantra, the student is required to observe certain commitments with regard to behavior and way of life, and to complete a number of meditation retreats.

Day Retreats, which are typically guided, are offered throughout the year at the center and provide an opportunity to gain retreat experience in a quiet, peaceful environment. Retreats include, among others, Awaken Your Loving Kindness, as well as Preliminary Guide Retreats including Refuge Retreat, Mandala Offering Retreat and Vajrasattva Retreat.

Chanted prayers, also known as pujas or chanted meditations, are offered as an important component of training in a spiritual life. Through changed prayers, one can experience the beauty and power of engaging in positive wishes as a group. Chanted prayers help practitioners to still the mind, connect with the Buddhas, and receive blessings. Weekly and monthly chanted prayers are offered, including Heart Jewel, Wishfulfilling Jewel, Offering to the Spiritual Guide, Prayers for the Deceased, Medicine Buddha and Precepts. Prayers are recited in English.

Population(s) Served

Family and Youth Programming consists of monthly Meditation for Families, Tween Meditation and Meditation for Kids. Meditation for Families classes are designed around the belief that families that meditate together become happy together. These classes include meditations, appropriate for both children and adults and a hands on activity. Tween Meditation is geared towards young people who are interested in learning to meditate and discuss solutions to practical problems faced at school and home. Meditation for Kids introduces meditation techniques to children and includes simple meditations and activity.
