Mission

The mission of the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. is to enrich and support the learning of Bridgeport's public school students through the involvement of volunteers from Bridgeport and surrounding communities.

Notes from the nonprofit

The School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. (SVA) has a long standing relationship with the Bridgeport Board of Education. The Board of Education provides space for the office and employs the staff of the School Volunteer Office, which consists of the Coordinator of Volunteer Services, Reading Enrichment Coordinator and Tutor Coordinator. It is important to note that the Coordinator of Volunteer Services also serves as the unpaid Executive Director of SVA. The staff of the School Volunteer Office works closely with SVA in recruiting and placing volunteers and providing programs for the children of the Bridgeport Public Schools. This arrangement allows SVA to direct the majority of its funding to the purchase of books and provision of programs for its volunteers and students.

Read Aloud Day

Read Aloud Day is a citywide event held each year in October.  On this day, we recruit over 650 community volunteers to join us for one hour to read enjoyable children's books to every pre-kindergarten through sixth grade class throughout the system.  The School Volunteer Association provides the books that are read and then donated to the classroom libraries.

Population(s) Served

Volunteers read books aloud to pre-kindergarten through sixth grade classes weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.  The School Volunteer Association provides a book a month to read and then donate to the classroom library.  Readers frequently spend additional time discussing the books and related topics with their classes.

Population(s) Served

Reading and Math Tutors work one-on-one or with small groups of elementary and middle school students.  Volunteers work under the guidance of the teachers who provide directions and materials to reinforce skills.  Tutors are given the opportunity to provide a book a month to their students to help them build their home libraries. Volunteers commit to work one hour each week with their students.

Population(s) Served

Mentors are paired with individual students in elementary and middle schools.  The objective is for children to have caring adults in their lives who show up consistently and serve as good role models.  As this is a school-based program, pairs typically meet at lunch time to eat, play games and work on school work and projects.  Mentors commit to see their mentees for an hour weekly and a minimum of a year.  This program is based on the Mentoring National Quality Standards.

Population(s) Served

Book Buddies listen to children read books, providing help as needed. Buddies typically spend 15 minutes with each child with whom they work.

Population(s) Served

This volunteer position provides one-on-one reading attention for 1st grade students to help them gain confidence in their reading abilities and discovering the love of reading.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The goals of SVA are to increase community participation in school volunteer programs and to foster constructive interest in and support for the city schools throughout the greater Bridgeport community.

SVA's annual, citywide Read Aloud Day is a wonderful strategy to recruit volunteers for the ongoing programs. Over 600 volunteers from the greater Bridgeport community join us for the one time event to read books aloud to every pre-kindergarten through 6th grade class. Many become so engaged with the students that they want to continue as ongoing volunteers through the remainder of the school year. The board and staff continue to promote the work of the organization throughout the year through media outlets and presentations to churches and community organizations. Volunteers also serve as great recruiters of other new volunteers. In addition, SVA works with businesses, creating events such as special read alouds to make it easy for their employees to join us
