LAVA became a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation under the name Volcano Love, Inc. in February 2000. LAVA's founder, Sarah East Johnson started working in 1994 to develop
and perform artistic works that combine dance, theater and acrobatics. Volcano Love's mission is to present LAVA productions as well as to offer instruction in acrobatics and dance to a diverse population of children and adults. LAVA is a troupe of artists who develop and perform original works that
combine dance, theater, and acrobatics. At the LAVA Studio in Brooklyn,
NY, ensemble and community members train and teach LAVA's rigorous,
creative, and inclusive movement language to children and adults.

Our programs

LAVA
Volcano Love produces one new show with LAVA every 12-18 months for a New York Season and organizes the touring of the shows to venues throughout the United States. In addition to creating at least one new work each season, LAVA members teach a unique blend of acrobatics and dance to children and adults throughout New York City. Classes have taken place at The Kitchen, Brooklyn Art Exchange, several NYC public and charter schools as well as the LAVA Studio in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. LAVA offers tuition based classes as well as scholarship and workstudy. Two weekly free workouts are offered to kids 5-18. Workshops are also offered in cities where the company tours to perform. Volcano Love also has a girls Jr. company, Magma, which is composed of girls ages 6 to 18. Magma meets twice per week and makes and performs shows annually.
