Mission

The American Place Theatre is committed to producing high quality new work by diverse American writers and to pursuing pluralism and diversity in all our endeavors. We strive to respond to our nation's despairing need for reading and cultural literacy with work that is relevant and cuts deeply into the fabric of American society.

The American Place Theatre was conceived over 49 years ago by Artistic Director/co-Founder Wynn Handman with the undisputed belief that the American theatre could be used by writers of stature; our poets, novelists, philosophers, and serious playwrights. Since then, the Theatre has been the launching pad for some of the most talented artists in theatre and letters. APT's vanguard role in theatre history has resulted in dozens of awards and significant recognition. We continue in this tradition in our 2008-09 Literature to Life Season by producing the work of American writers such as Khaled Hosseini, Sue Monk Kidd, Lemon Andersen, and Frank McCourt and premiering the productions of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and Flight by Sherman Alexie.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Literature to Life

Literature to Life®, The American Place Theatre's performance-based literacy program, presents professionally staged verbatim adaptations of significant American literary works. This educational program gives students a new form of access to literature by bringing to life the world of books with performances that create an atmosphere of discovery and spark the imagination.

Literature to Life helps to foster students' personal connections to standards-based units of study through three strands of programming: Performances, Residencies, and Professional Development.

Our scope includes 24 productions which have been experienced by over 350,000 students and educators in over 72 cities across the country in venues ranging from a classroom of 20 students in the Bronx to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Library of Congress.
