What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Medical Relief Program
CitiHope's Medical Relief Program seeks to provide the right drugs, to the right people, in the right quantities, at the right time, for the best impact possible. All CHI medical initiatives follow common core principals:
Medicines & medical supplies must benefit recipients to the maximum extent possible;
Donations should be made with full respect of needs & authority of end-user recipients;
Effective communication between CitiHope and beneficiary in-country institutions is imperative; and
All donations distributed freely without regard to race, religion, ethnicity.
The program's goal is to assist indigenous medical institutions and physicians through the delivery of medicine and medical supplies for the proper protocols of treatment. CitiHope delivers this assistance to the neediest rural populations possible, while building the capacity of local NGOs. Using a proven multi-component approach allows for steady growth of pharmaceutical inputs, progressive allocations to rural primary healthcare clinics, a comprehensive monitoring and distribution policy, diverse and effective local partners, meeting demands of both disease and drug priorities, enhancing physician capabilities, and building confidence among suppliers.
While other NGOs have similar approaches to management, CitiHope's Medical Program is unique in three important ways:
CitiHope adheres to a Rational Pharmaceutical Management (RPM) discipline recommended by WHO. RPM includes Assessment, Procurement, Selection, Distribution, Usage and Monitoring of medicines in an integrated cycle of activities common to an effective pharmaceutical care system. This unified approach allows for proper management of pharmaceuticals and indirectly, training in RPM, critical for sustainability of health reforms in developing countries.
CitiHope not only procures over-the-counter medicines - we also focus on WHO/MOH Essential Drug List medicines in quantities appropriate for each country’s needs. The quality and efficacy of pharmaceuticals are constant determining factors in CitiHope’s passion to match the MOST needed medicines with each new shipment opportunity.
CitiHope Drug Instructions are translated according to WHO standards, supported by regular protocol reinforcement with recipient physicians and health care institutions. Patient-friendly guides are also made available to ensure effective administration of each medicine prescribed.
Food Security Program
CitiHope works to improve the food security of communities, hospitals and care centers who have limited access to balanced food products, resulting in malnutrition of needy people.
CitiHope's food relief program began in 1994 with the delivery of over 42,000 metric tons of uncontaminated food products to Belarus and Ukraine, partnering with USDA.
CitiHope is committed to addressing the food security concerns in each region of the world that it operates. CHI recognizes that food, like medicine, is an essential component to comprehensive health, and is always looking for private and public organizations with whom to collaborate on fostering nutrition and developing food security.
Pharmaceutical Care Program
Pharmaceutical care is defined as "responsive provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve the patient's quality of life" (Helper and Strand).
CitiHope International is implementing a Pharmaceutical Care Program (PCP) at the primary health care level in the Kyrgyz Republic. After a successful two-year pilot project funded by USAID, this Pharmaceutical Care Program has been introduced into Zdrav Plus II, a health care reform project funded by USAID.
The Kyrgyz Ministry of Health considers rational drug management and clinical pharmacology essential components in quality medical care improvement, as reflected in the Kyrgyz National Health Care Reform Program "Manas-Taalimi" for 2006-2010.
The Round Table conducted in 2005 (see below) has assisted in formulating a strategy for pharmaceutical care development in Kyrgyzstan. There are many instances of irrational drug usage in Bishkek and surrounding Oblasts, and the pharmaceutical care system initiated by CitiHope is addressing this issue.
