Mission

The Writers Guild Initiative, the new name of the Writers Guild of America, East Foundation was created to perpetuate the art and craft of storytelling, either by professionals or amateurs, through education and practical experience, on local, national and global levels.

The Initiative seeks to identify the next generation of storytellers, inclusive of all ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds, and to have an impact by giving them the skills to express who they are and how they experience their world. Our motto, "What's your story? Find your voice. Tell it." is a simple expression of this vision.

We FIND... ENCOURAGE... WORK:

FIND the next generation of storytellers, ENCOURAGE WGAE members, staff, and artists to contribute their expertise to the Initiative's activities, and WORK with other like-minded organizations in order to facilitate and expand the needs and goals of storytellers and writers everywhere.

WRITERS WORKSHOPS TO PROMOTE THE ART OF WRITING SCREENPLAYS

Population(s) Served

The NEA award winning Actors & Writers Book Club brings a high profile actor and a professional writer into underserved high schools to read and discuss a work of literature. Though the dynamic presence of a working author, and an actor recognizable to students through film and television, the program aims to make the experience of reading personal and immediate.

Students experience writers and actors speaking with passion about the impact of literature in their own development, and come to appreciate how reading can powerfully effect the course of their own lives, both personally and professionally.

Population(s) Served

Begun in April 2008, these writing workshops give veterans, disabled veterans, active duty military, and caregivers of permanently wounded soldiers an opportunity to explore storytelling in all its forms with mentoring from writers across all genres and mediums. Through our partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project, we have mentored over 150 caregivers and veterans. We continue to seek out various communities with whom we can share our skills and communicate our excitement about how writing can help other express how they experience their world.

Population(s) Served

This fellowship, underwritten by a grant from the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation (www.kingfoundation.org), is awarded to an undergraduate student who plans to pursue a career in screenwriting upon completion of their undergraduate course of study. The recipient is chosen by the Collyer selection committee from a list of nationwide colleges and universities. The winner receives a $10,000 stipend to write an original screenplay and is mentored during the course of the fellowship year by a prominent screenwriter
