Mission

The Public Interest Law Foundation at Columbia, Inc. (PILF) is an independent, not-for-profit organization founded by members of the Columbia Law School community in 1980. PILF is privately funded and raises money through events, donations, and membership dues to support and promote the practice of public interest law at Columbia Law School and across the country. PILF distributes money raised as community grants to non-profit organizations offering legal services and to Columbia Law School's Guaranteed Summer Funding program, which supports students seeking to work for public-interest organizations during the course of their studies.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

PILF seeks to raise money to support public-interest legal work nationwide. This includes providing grants to non-profits engaged in legal work and supporting Columbia Law School students seeking to work for public-interest organizations.

PILF primarily raises money in connection with its two major annual events: the Annual Dinner, which celebrates accomplishments in the public-interest legal community and honors an outstanding member of that community, and the Bid for Justice Auction, which raises significant funds by auctioning off items donated by the larger community.

PILF has been supporting the public-interest legal community for over 30 years. Its two large fundraising events have each been held for over 20 years. PILF is largely run by Columbia Law School students, with support by the faculty, staff, and alumni of the school.

PILF has been successful in supporting the public-interest legal community and Columbia Law School students interested in public-interest legal work. There is significant room for growth in the core fundraising programs, however, and the organization seeks to increase its contribution levels.
