aka The Crayons Project   |   Plainfield, NJ   |  www.africaseed.org

Mission

Three decades ago AFRICA Seed’s original mission was to assist children, youths, and families of African communities—whether cities, towns, suburbs, or villages—primarily by working WITH them and learning FROM them, while presenting modern Africa to Americans. It still is.           AFRICA Seed aims to stimulate public awareness in Americans regarding modern African communities by exploring, studying, and participating in community service projects, whether here in the U.S. or in Africa.

The Crayons Project

The Crayons Project is the most popular of AFRICA Seed's programs. Teachers have their students collect shoe boxes of used crayons, chalk, pencils, and erasers and mail them to African school who partner with us. Preschools through colleges have collected as well as churches, sororities, fraternities, restaurants and entire TOWNS!

Child Sponsorship in the form donating to a preschool child's school fees has been a continuous program since the 1990's. donors can choose to pay all the school fees for a child they select from our website, or just the standard amount of $108 for one year. Schools receive the funds to pay for required schooling, the standard for African and other parts of the world.

The program also offers, SISTER SCHOOLS, where schools here can communicate with, exchange, and financially support a school or classroom of an African school for as little as $50.00. Individuals can also ADOPT A SCHOOL by donating to a selected school.

Study Trips use the vehicle of vising schools to expose travelers to the country and its culture. Typically, day visits are planned to visit schools. In some cases it means being driven to another part of the country and staying over at a Guest House. In all cases it provides a way to be out and among the people, as well as seeing the local area. It provides opportunities to talk and interact with local people. We 'visit' schools, not study them. The study is focused on the 'culture', and we discuss that each evening. There are evening talks about your day or your recorded thoughts and events in your journal.
