What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Alternative to Incarceration
We offer an alternative to incarceration for non-violent first-time offenders who can demonstrate that they want to change We expect individuals to take responsibility for their actions, undergo counseling, stay drug-free, get a high-school equivalency degree, and find and hold a job. The recidivism rate for people who complete our program is only 1.5%, compared with the national recidivism rate of nearly 70%. And this effectiveness is much more cost effective: it costs only $11,000 a year for us to support a person at Abraham House vs. $45,000 to keep them in prison. We average five men at a time in our residential and 15 men and women in our non-residential program.
After School Program
We work to break the cycle of incarceration that puts the children of the incarcerated at greater risk of dropping out of school, becoming a teen-age parent, and committing a crime. Our After School Program provides a safe year-round haven for the children of the families in our Family and Pastoral Center, most of whom have a direct link to incarceration. We tutor them, help them do well in school, and provide them with opportunities to realize all that they are capable of achieving—so they don’t end up following in the footsteps of their incarcerated relatives. Graduates of our program are now in college.
Family and Pastoral Center
Believing that individuals caught up in the criminal justice system can only successfully turn their lives around with the support of their families, Abraham House offers the families of the incarcerated a safe place to gather and talk about their problems, make friends, and enjoy a weekend meal and bilingual church service. We also offer a array of counseling support, referrals to social service programs, and a weekly food bank. Together these programs serve between 400 and 500 families, mostly Spanish-speaking immigrants.
