Mission

Friends of Israel Scouts, Inc. was incorporated in 1995 encompassing programs that began in the early 1960s to develop and maintain the connection between the Tzofim (Israel Scouts) movement in Israel, the ONLY youth movement in Israel that is both non-political and non-sectarian, and the Jews of North America. Friends of Israel Scouts, Inc. recognizes that the youth of Israel are both her hope and future. What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Friends of Israel Scouts' mission is to strengthen the connection between Israel and North America. We primarily focus on the Israeli American community and addressing their unique needs. When Israelis immigrate to the United States and build their families, their children are often conflicted about their identity. They feel too Israeli in the United States, and to American in Israel. They do not have a community to call their own. In addition, there are hundreds of young adults who want to make Aliyah (move to Israel) and integrate into Israeli society. These young adults may not have family in Israel, so they are alone in a new, unfamiliar country. This feeling of loneliness, which sometimes includes a lack of fluency in Hebrew, makes integrating into life in Israel an extremely isolating experience, where any small, mundane problem becomes an insurmountable hurdle to living a normal life.

Friends of Israel Scouts Programs

Zofim Tzabar:
A program run by the Friends of the Israel Scouts, Inc., Tzofim, is a youth movement for Israeli, Hebrew speaking children in North America. The youth-led movement operates 22 chapters. Weekly activities are held in Hebrew, planned and executed by high school children leading kids grades 3-9. Tzofim Tzabar is part of the world scouts movement through the Hebrew Scouts of Israel. Every year Alumni of the Israeli movement are sent to North America as Chapter Leaders to lead these activities with over 2000 youth taking part every week.

Summer Delegation:
Tzofim Summer Delegation brings delegation scouts to North America to serve as counselors or specialists in summer camps, both day and overnight, doing scouting activities, teaching about Israel’s history and culture and creating hands-on projects about Israel.

CVK:
Tzofim Chetz V’Keshet (CVK) is a program for teens ages 14-18 living outside of Israel to experience a summer in Israel… Israeli style! The program began in 1981 and was established through a connection between the Israeli Army and the Friends of Israel Scouts, Inc. –Tzofim. Tzofim CVK is the only program run by the IDF, ensuring that participants are secure as they travel and experience the best sides of Israel. Participants join Israeli Tzofim (scouts) throughout their experience in order to gain an authentic appreciation for Israel.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

- Strengthen relationships between Israel and North American Jewry

- Project Israel in a positive light

- Promote brotherhood, tolerance, and respect among people of all faiths

- Form strong bonds of friendship between the Israeli youth and their American counterparts

- Provide support for the Tzofim movement in Israel

To address the identity issues facing Israeli-American teenagers, FOIS offers Tzofim Tzabar, a version of the Tzofim youth movement in Israel. Every Sunday, Israeli-American children gather for team building and leadership experiences in Hebrew. The high school students lead groups of younger children, and together they strengthen their Hebrew, connection to Israel, and their Israeli and Jewish identities.

In addition to working with Israeli-American teens across the United States, FOIS also offers additional programs:
The Tzofim Friendship Caravan is a group of teens from the Scouting movement in Israel who travel across the United States with a performing arts and Israeli culture show. Through song, dance, and personal stories, the Caravan brings a piece of Israel and strengthens the connection between the US and Israel, everywhere they go.

To support new immigrants, FOIS offers Tzofim Garin Tzabar. Garin Tzabar includes a series of preparatory seminars for future immigrants to Israel, ages 18-24. Here, they meet the fellow members of their Garin (nucleus), a group that will live together on a Kibbutz or Youth Village during their first few years of life in Israel, providing social and emotional support. Once they arrive to Israel, each Garin is welcomed into their Kibbutz or Youth Village and receives ongoing professional support in every aspect of their absorption process and integration into Israeli society.

We have a robust staff of Shlichim (Israeli emissaries) across the United States, who supervise our local Tzofim Tzabar chapters. These individuals are alumni of the Tzofim movement in Israel, and they bring a rich background of educational experiences with them in order to guide and influence the youth with whom they work.

Our Garin Tzabar program is comprised of a staff of dedicated individuals who are Israeli citizens (both natural born and immigrants themselves), who guide and support new immigrants with compassion and their personal experiences.

We have worked with thousands of Israeli-American youth through Tzofim Tzabar, and supported thousands of new Israeli immigrants through Tzogim Garin Tzabar. Through the Tzofim Friendship Caravan, we have connected hundreds of thousands of people across North America to Israel. We plan to continue this amazing work for many years to come!
