Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Overall work
Community Voices Heard's current work includes Follow Black Women, Public Housing Preservation & Improvement, Tenant Organizing, and Civic and Voter Engagement. We also anchor the Fair Chance for Housing campaign. CVH has chapters in New York City, and Westchester, Orange and Dutchess Counties.
Public Housing Campaign
Preservation of NY City Housing Authority buildings, housing over 400,000 low-income and working-class residents, from privatization and/or a sell-off and pushing government officials to fully fund the massive repairs needed after years of disinvestment. CVH is also working towards public housing preservation and improvements in other areas of the state including Yonkers, Newburgh, and Poughkeepsie.
Economic Justice
Upend the existing power structures and transform the social safety net into a system that would enable low-income people to break out of poverty. CVH leaders are also fighting for the development and improvement of effective jobs programs that provide opportunities for career path employment with living wages that can support a family.
Tenant Organizing
CVH is organizing non-public housing rent-stabilized tenants in Harlem and East Harlem. We have identified buildings whose tenants are most at risk of being harassed and/or displaced, and organizing and educating tenants living in these buildings to form and strengthen tenant associations in a united effort to curb speculation, harassment and displacement.
Civic Engagement
We seek to create spaces for member-leaders; those directly impacted, to engage in conversation with governmental players to lift of existing problems, highlight alternatives and together figure out possible solutions to these racial, social and economic inequities.
Affordable Housing
Ensure NY residents have access to affordable housing
