Mission

Since 1994, Afrika Tikkun has provided hope, sustenance and a career path to tens of thousands of South Africa's most disadvantaged youth. Our unique Cradle-to-Career development model enables over 550+ employees to deliver services addressing the educational, medical and economic needs of marginalized youth from early infancy through adulthood, inspiring and enabling them to become productive citizens and leaders. The mandate of Afrika Tikkun USA is to work with international foundations, family offices and other donor groups who support our platform and infrastructure in South Africa, so we may enable more NGO's to be successful in their speciality focus areas, using our back-end support and extensive network of resources.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Orphans & Vulnerable Children

Orphans and Vulnerable Children - Using over 33 trained community workers, we identify and support OVC and Child Headed Households within the 5 communities we serve. We enable these children to go to school by equipping them with uniforms, food and stationery, and free them of the burden of caretaking their HIV?AIDS afflicted parents by taking over their day to day care. They are also provided with lifeskills training in OVC centres which we build to undertake the activities and to provide recreation. We provide children with psycho-social support to come to terms with their grief and also bereavement counselling. Monthly food parcels are provided for households that are headed by children and/or that are vulnerable due to HIV/AIDs and we also provide security by putting them under the care of community home-based carers and by securing their homes. We enable them to obtain government support but it is a process that takes between 2 - 5 years. We presently care for over 1000 orphans and vulnerable children.


YOUTH PROGRAMS - A large focus is placed on youth programs and camps to enable youth who are vulnerable to poverty, drug abuse and gangsterism to uplift themselves by involving them in programes that give them status and by selling their success. We presently have 1500 youth benefitting from this program in the Western Cape alone and seek to replicate it in Gauteng.

 Care of the Aged - Renovation and reconstruction of informal housing. The development of multi-purpose day care centres to provide the elderly with food, care and warm environment, medical advice and care through caregivers and centres. We presently have 200 elderly people benefitting from this program

Reaction Unit - The MaAfrika Tikkun reaction unit collects non-perishable foods, clothes, blankets and household equipment and basic building supplies for distribution within the communities it works in, for use during emergencies e.g fires, floods, etc which are common in informal housing settlements.

The vision of the Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Program is for children, youth and their families to actively pursue their human rights.
Our mission is to provide a program that facilitates children, youth and their families to work together as agents for change within their homes, community and country, by providing the tools to support each other, access resources and opportunities, and campaign for change wherever services, systems and attitudes exclude them or violate their human rights.
The objectives of the Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Program are:
1. To empower children, youth and their families to understand their human rights and
avenues for recourse
2. To facilitate the development of self-advocacy groups among people in Afrika
Tikkun communities who are at risk of, or experiencing, human rights violations
3. To support self-advocacy groups to hold duty-bearers to account and drive social and structural change by undertaking advocacy campaigns that address the human rights issues that are important to them
4. To support children, youth and families to navigate complex health, social development, education, child protection and justice systems in pursuit of their human rights
5. To develop and share good practice in using empowerment approaches for the provision of safe, non-discriminatory and inclusive development programs for children, youth and their families

With 67% youth unemployment, our Work Readiness Training is one of the most significant tools empowering young people with the critical skills needed to prepare them for the working world. Work Readiness Training serves as the foundational program in our career development journey with young people.

Investing in early childhood development ensures the protection and development of the children’s well-being and guarantees peace, security and prosperity for the community as a whole.

Many of our young people live in under-resourced and challenging communities and as a result, struggle to complete their education. Our Child and Youth Development Program takes a holistic approach to supporting young people by address their psychological, physical, emotional and social needs. This, in the long run, contributes to changing their environments

The Nutrition and Food Security Program is implemented to ensure that there is balance in the development of the many young people who are part of our programs. Young people might be getting educational help at our centers but that on its own is not enough. For some of them they go back to their homes to sleep on an empty stomach which is not good for their development. Therefore, this program provides the beneficiaries with age appropriate and dietician certified nutritious meals each time they are at the centers. Food parcels are also provided for those who come from struggling families who cannot afford food.
Objectives:
1- To increase food security and nutritional support for marginalized and vulnerable children and families through providing daily balanced meals to our beneficiaries.

2- Establishing food gardens and other nutritional activities necessary to educate and empower beneficiaries and other community members.

3- To ensure that healthy balanced meals are available and accessible for beneficiaries in a dignified manner so as to enhance and maintain the physical and psychological well-being of our beneficiaries.

South Africa's multitudes of disadvantaged children face unique challenges that are no fault of their own. For many, lack of access to basics such as having parents, food, shelter and healthcare means that daily life revolves around simple survival, frequently leading away from education and social promise into despair driven crime.

Afrika Tikkun's mission is to break the cycle of poverty, providing these children with hope, capability and promise. Our goal is to provide disadvantaged youth with access to education, life-skills and confidence to enable them to become the self-sustaining, productive future of the country. We aim to mobilize the local communities and empower them with the skills and resources they need to live a self-sustainable life. This was the shared goal of Nelson Mandela, our founding Patron, whose legacy we strive to live by and to instill in all those we touch.

Our strategy to achieve sustainable development of our beneficiaries is our 360-degree approach towards development. Our Cradle to Career model reflects our commitment to supporting children from infancy into adulthood and employment to ensure that they become the next generation of productive South African citizens. Our Cradle to Career Model is supplemented by comprehensive and coordinated programs/services that erode or eliminate other barriers to success. These supplemental programs/services include- Nutrition and Food Security Programs, Healthcare Programs, Family Support Services, and Psychological/Psychosocial Services. The model works through cross referrals between integrated programs to ensure the holistic development of young people.

The Cradle to Career Development Model is an effective solution and strategy for:
• South Africa's high number of orphaned and vulnerable young people
• Poor schooling and academic outcomes
• Social shocks of poverty (drugs, crime, gangsterism, gender-based violence)
• Generational unemployment
• Poor productivity of the employed

As a values-based organization, Afrika Tikkun focuses on community-driven delivery and strategic partnerships with like-valued partners to maximize resources and efficiency. Over the years we have developed strategic partnerships across sectors to increase the impact of our work which has also allowed us to achieve our goals. Afrika Tikkun's operational entities leverage South Africa's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Codes of Good Practice, which are designed to distribute wealth across as broad a spectrum of previously disadvantaged South African society as possible.

Furthermore, the three pillars of the organization—Afrika Tikkun (NGO), Afrika Tikkun Services (social enterprise) and Afrika Tikkun Investment Trust (equity and ownership)—have enabled it to transform from a great cause to an innovative business partner for private sector entities, by providing them brand-building opportunities in townships, employee engagement, tax reduction, and regulatory compliance support to enable them to leverage the BBBEE Codes of Good Practice. Our three pillars, makes us more than just a charitable organization but a business partner and a central hub for different corporate transformation agendas.

Additionally, we have deep roots and local presence in the communities we serve. 85% of our staff members are local people recruited from the five township communities we serve. This peer-to-peer relationship between staff and program beneficiaries allows meaningful collaboration and honest feedback to help us continually improve programs to better serve needs of the local community. These deep community roots creates greater understanding of the many related challenges faced by those we serve and help us better respond to these needs through comprehensive and coordinated programs

For the past 22 years Afrika Tikkun has successfully implemented comprehensive youth development programs to support disadvantaged young people in realizing their potential. To date, our programs have impacted and served 150,000 direct beneficiaries in the South African townships.
