Changing faces, Transforming lives

New York, NY

Mission

myFace exists to transform patients' lives by funding medical procedures and research performed at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center to repair facial disfigurement, and by providing social, psychological and financial support to families in need.

myFace, formerly the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction, was founded in 1951 to address
the all-too-visible plight of those with facial difference by assuring them access to the comprehensive
and highly personalized team care at the IRPS. myFace provides care to all those who request
treatment, regardless of the type or severity of the anomaly, the length of treatment, or the family's
ability to afford care.

The mission of myFace is to transform patients' lives by funding medical procedures and research performed at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center to repair facial disfigurement, and by providing social, psychological and financial support to families in need.

Through our initiatives which include the IPRS, The Newman Family Support Center, and our New Wonder Project we hope to raise awareness about myFace and it's cause.

IRPS:

The Institute conducts one of the largest plastic surgery educational programs in the world, and its research program has made major contributions in the areas of transplantation, wound healing, craniofacial biology, computer graphics and distraction osteogenesis.

Embracing a team approach, specialists meet regularly to evaluate new and former patients with complex problems and formulate comprehensive treatment plans. This process saves families time and prepares our team to move forward with both insight and care. Our surgical team of 54 medical specialists provides state-of-the-art trans-formative care to address every facial anomaly.

The Newman Family Support Center:

The team at Newman includes a Social Worker, Clinical Psychologist, Geneticist, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Speech Pathologist, Nutritionist, and Family Program Coordinator. The team provides counseling for genetic, psychiatric, behavioral, social, pre-natal and post-natal, speech, mentoring, resource and medical issues.

myFace also hosts networking, therapeutic and educational programs for patients and their families. Finally, we provide an apartment for out-of-town families while their child is undergoing surgery and treatment, as well as complimentary round trip tickets on Southwest Airlines. With 70% of our patients living in poverty our support services have proved instrumental in empowering families.

The Wonder Project:

This New York Times Best Seller is the ideal foundation for the pro-compassion English Language Arts curriculum that myFace is developing. Working in collaboration with Wonder's author, R. J. Palacio, we will be launching our empathy education in schools throughout the US this fall.

Our assessment is based on numbers of children served and quality of the services provided to them and their families. We are managing steady growth. Specifically, we continue to monitor and assess the impact of growth in: numbers of families we offer myFace services to at the NYU Medical Center's Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (IRPS); the numbers of families requesting financial support through our Family Assistance fund both regionally and from around the country; and the number of families using the myFace apartment. Assessment tools to track attitudinal changes are built into our national education programs for elementary/middle/high school teachers. We use these to determine the impact of the programs and to identify ways to improve them.

Thanks to myFace's annual support of $3 million dollars, as well as the generosity of the Institute's doctors who provide their services pro bono for our neediest patients, all children at the Institute receive the same quality reconstructive care. Since children with severe deformities often need 40-80 procedures during their childhood years, treating these patients is our greatest challenge.
