Save The Home Sweet Home Mosaic
In 2012 a group of artists from West End Arts collaborated on a community art project as a response to hurricane Sandy. The project was called Home Sweet Home and is a mosaic type installation made from pieces of the original Long Beach Boardwalk. It is over 30 feet long. Today it sits on the boardwalk just east of Rip Tides near the Edwards Blvd ramp.
This project symbolizes hope, community, rebuilding and strength. When you look closely at each piece of the mosaic you see that this art mosaic tells many individual stories. The effect of all these stories together, each representing a personal experience to hurricane Sandy is what makes this piece of art so powerful.
Unfortunately time and the elements have not been kind to the mosaic. The paintings are beginning to yellow and peel and some pieces are missing. It is in need of a major restoration in order for it to be preserved as a monument to our community. The artists at West End Arts intend to have some of the individual pieces repainted by the original artists, secure loose pieces, and protect it all with a plexiglass cover.
Since West End Arts is a non-profit on a shoestring budget we need to raise money for this project. The City Of Long Beach does not have a budget for this project so it is up to us to raise the funds to complete the restoration.
