What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Worker Center

A principle activity of the Worker Center is training and organizing our members to win concrete improvements in their workplaces including recovering stolen wages, ending discrimination and sexual harassment, and improving health and safety conditions. Since 2002 Arise has organized members to recover over $8.7 million in stolen wages and compensation. Approximately 25 workers find Arise weekly, many of whom become members and begin Workplace Justice Campaigns to organize co-workers into workplace committees. In 2020, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Arise receives approximately 150 worker contacts per week. Members lead and make all decisions on their own Workplace Justice Campaigns, formulating demands, conducting power analyses, and designing strategy.

The Worker Center also develops member leadership through their campaigns and ongoing training including the Arise Leadership Institute.

Population(s) Served
Immigrants and migrants
Economically disadvantaged people
Women

A subset of the Worker Center is the Domestic Worker Organizing Committee. Arise offers workforce development trainings in Nanny/Infant and Child Development, Green Cleaning, and CPR/First Aid, and whose curriculum was developed in partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. These trainings act as a point of first contact for domestic workers with Arise Chicago, and also contain Workers Rights curriculum.
The Domestic Worker program also includes monthly meetings specifically for domestic workers for ongoing training, time for community-building, updates and action for workplace and policy campaigns.

Population(s) Served

Arise Chicago organizes low-wage workers to take action for public policy change. After workers take action to improve their own workplaces, they go on to lead campaigns to improve policies for all workers, at the city, county, and state levels.

Cook County Anti-Wage Theft Ordinance
Chicago Paid Sick Days Ordinance (with our Paid Sick Time coalition)
