Edlin Leslie Sr. Hospice: Residential Hospice Building Project
Construction of the Edlin Leslie Sr. Hospice, named for the father of Dr. Rachael Battle, Founder and President of Blissfulsage Foundation commenced on April 15th, 2020. This hospice facility will serve as the headquarters of Blissfulsage Foundation Belize operations. Before commencing operations as a hospice home, our 6-bed Hospice Home will follow all protocols set forth by the Belize Ministry of Health in obtaining a license to operate as a hospice. Mr. Edlin Leslie Sr. was a fisherman and Justice of the Peace in Placencia Village, Belize. At the end of his life, he expressed his wishes to his youngest daughter of 11 children that it was his wish to have hospice services in his community. Battle, the 10th of 11 children promised her dad to fulfill his wishes. Thirteen years later after years of providing end-of-life support services to terminally ill patients in their homes and conducting fundraising efforts for ongoing program operations and the building fund, Battle and her team commenced construction on April 15, 2020, during the second month of the Covid 19 Pandemic. While fundraising efforts to complete the construction of the entire complex, the construction continues. Construction includes all building materials, labor, electrical, plumbing, water and electricity installation fencing and land landscaping, and all applicable architectural
/ building plan and building and environmental and health inspection and permit fees.

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our foundation goals are threefold. To build and operate the first residential hospice program in Belize, Central America for the benefit of the Belize facing end of life decisions. Secondly, our annual Battle Cancer Edlin Leslie Sr. 5 Mile Run/Walk brings our communities together. During this time we are able to listen to the lessons from survivors and other advocates and access free cancer screenings immediately following the walk. Third, our Battle Cancer early detection program helps to support individuals and families by bringing the cancer services to them and providing an annual program. We provide information to our community from both the American Cancer Society and the American Dermatology Association. Ultimately we aim broaden our reach by increasing the number of participants in our events exponentially each year. Through the hospice program we aim to provide a home where individuals facing end of life decisions can live the rest of lives with dignity while receiving quality compassionate care in a nurtuing and loving environment.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Consistency with our BattleCancer Walk and early detection program has been the key strategy for ensuring the success and continuity and growth of our programs. Establishing collaborative partnerships, gaining support and buy in from the community has been instrumental in this process.
The Hospice buidling project is a monumental talk. Our collaborative efforts with key stakeholders has been important. Ongoing fundraising for the past 18 months, commitment to ensuring that we continue to work through the challenging economic circumstances and coordinating the efforts of all who are willing to provide pro bono services to assist in making this project a reality are key strategies to building this 12 bed residential hospice facility.
