Training

ACTION trains volunteers to provide for the practical and emotional needs of individuals and families struggling with HIV/AIDS. The complications and isolation of living with this life-threatening condition too often result in depression and the inability to follow a strenuous medical regime. In a perverse circular equation, depression and the psychological and emotional impact of HIV/AIDS has been proven to negatively affect the immune system, requiring stronger medications that can, in turn, take a greater toll and prompt more depression. The presence of a CareTeam of six to twelve supportive people demonstrably improves the mental health of the individual, giving the CarePartner a better quality of life, a renewed will to live, a sense of belonging and resolve and support to follow demanding medical protocols. Working within a team supports volunteers and contributes significantly to volunteer retention. ACTION also plays a unique and vital role in HIV/AIDS education in our communities, bringing a message of awareness, knowledge, and compassion and risk avoidance. ACTION's training and enrichment workshops and community presentations (all open to the wider community) support not only volunteers but also serve to broaden AIDS awareness community-wide. The trainings have become a highly respected resource for AIDS education in the lives of friends and neighbors who may not otherwise be exposed to such practical and accessible information. Volunteers carry their education and experience widely out to the broader community.
