Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Snake River Search (SRS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation headquartered in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The corporation originated in 1958 and has operated over the years as “Bonneville County Sheriff's Jeep Patrol" and “Bonneville County Sheriff's Search and Rescue". Membership consists of highly committed and well-trained volunteers who have hundreds of years combined experience and have donated tens of thousands of hours and miles providing services. No member receives compensation for their time, supplies, clothing or the services they provide. The organization is funded totally by donations, grants, fundraisers and the contributions of its members.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
SRS is focused on leveraging the technical expertise and dedication of our members to provide advanced support capabilities to assist responsible agencies in the conduct, and resolution, of the missing person search. Additionally, SRS provides training to search personnel from other agencies in advanced technologies, and to the general public (particularly children) on safety and prevention.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
SEARCH CANINE SUPPORT
SRS dogs and handlers are competent, skilled teams that have passed, or are actively working to pass, rigorous testing to become certified by the National Search Dog Alliance (NSDA), the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) and Tri-State K9s in: Air Scent, Tracking, Water and Cadaver Search. SRS presently has nine certified canines and three in training.
.
REMOTE AND ENHANCED SEARCH SUPPORT
SRS is at the forefront of the development of the effective use of Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) to support the search for missing persons. We currently have four FAA certified sUAS pilots and have developed a training program for both pilots and support personnel. This training is for both our own personnel and those from other agencies. SRS currently has ten sUAS platforms available for use owned by SRS or SRS personnel.
SEARCH ANALYSIS SUPPORT
SRS has a mobile support center where search data is compiled and analyzed. The team utilizes advanced geographical information system (GIS) mapping, coupled with detailed analysis of past and on-going field search data, to allow for 3-dimensional analysis of the search area and to develop future strategies.
PREVENTATIVE SEARCH AND RESCUE
SRS members have presented the Preventative Search and Rescue program "Hug A Tree and Survive" to thousands of kids throughout Southeastern Idaho, and continue to offer this service to school groups, civic groups, church groups, and other organizations free of charge. SRS also attends safety fairs and presents safety tips to adults and children.
TRAINING
Provide training to both SRS personnel and those from other agencies in advanced search techniques including sUAS/Drone, communications, mapping & analysis, and K9 team development.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
During 2017 SRS:
Participated in 6 missing person searches.
K9 teams passed 19 evaluations.
Four sUAS/Drone pilots certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) conducted training for SRS and personnel from other agencies.
Developed a sUAS Drone pilot training program (oriented to FAA Part 107 certification) which will begin in January 2018 and has 20 students enrolled from various agencies and SRS.
K9 Teams supported and participated in excess of 100 training and evaluation events involving SRS teams and teams from other agencies.
