Mission

The Purple Elephant Computer Factory addresses two needs within the community.  First, there are many individuals and companies in our area who need to responsibly dispose of PCs they no longer use.   At the same time, there are many families and individuals who need access to a home computer, but cannot afford $500+ for a system.
We accept donated PCs, refurbish them, and install a new Windows OS and other software.  We provide these Internet-ready PCs to KIDS OF ALL AGES, and those who support them, either at no cost to the family or at a low cost.  These PCs will:
Enable kids to cross the digital divide;
Reduce the high school dropout rate;
Increase end-of-grade test scores;  and
Connect military families with their deployed active duty parents.
We work with nonprofits, organizations, schools, businesses and the general public throughout North Carolina, primarily in the Raleigh-Durham area.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

computer refurbishing

This program supports the technology side the Purple Elephant.   We receive and sort donated equipment.

PC's are tested and evaluated to determine if they meet, or can be upgraded to, our minimum configuration requirement for refurbishing.   Refurbishing includes:  adding any needed hardware (e.g., memory), wiping the hard drive, loading a Windows OS and other software, verifying drivers, and final QA.

Keyboards, mice, speakers, monitors and printers are cleaned and tested.

Any equipment that can not be refurbished and reused are prepared for a technology recyler (i.e., does not go to the landfill).

Population(s) Served

This Elephant Walk (1 mile) and Stampede (5 K) is a summer fund raising event to place home computers with needy kids in the RTP area, at no cost to their families.
We work with specific organizations to identify kids who need a home computer for the upcoming school year.
Funds are raised by charging the participants, and by sponsorships (3 levels).  Our target is to net $100 per child who will receive a computer PC.  (The Purple Elephant normally sells its computers for $100-$200 per internet-ready PC system.)
Expenses include the cost for the venue, T-shirts for participants and volunteers, refreshments (water, food), etc.

Population(s) Served

The Purple Elephant partially funds it operations by selling refurbished PCs and other donated equipment (e.g., printers).  Currently, this is done at our main site. We are planning to open a small store in North Raleigh, to increase our sales volumes.
