Mission

From the time man first took flight in the early 1900s to the recent shuttle missions into space, South Central Kentucky has played a significant role in the history of aviation. One of the first pilots to fly in combat claimed ties to Bowling Green, as did a World War I flying ace, a pioneer instructor pilot, a Vietnam war hero, Commanders of the famed Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels, the Commander/Pilot of “Marine One”, the presidential helicopter unit and the Mission Commander for the space shuttle Atlantis. These aviators – and their ties to South Central Kentucky – deserve to be recognized and celebrated so that future generations might be made aware of and motivated by their extraordinary achievements.

However, their stories were not being told and are at risk for being forgotten. These aviators – and their ties to South Central Kentucky – deserve to be recognized and celebrated so that future generations might be made aware of and motivated by their extraordinary achievements.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Open Cockpit Day and Drone Dash

AHP welcomes the public to an up-close, open cockpit, look at all six of the park warbirds. Knowledgeable docents are on hand discussing the aircraft and telling the stories of the pilots.

Viewing platforms are available for all the park aircraft for this program.

When visitors climb up to see the Northrup T-38 Talon, they are invited to not only look, but also climb into the seat of this NASA trainer honoring local astronaut Terry Wilcutt. This Talon #901 was flown by all the astronauts who have ever walked on the moon.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Aviation Heritage Park (AHP) seeks to recognize, honor, and celebrate the history and legacy of significant South Central Kentucky aviators through the collection, preservation and continuous display of aircraft and other artifacts relating to their careers. We use these as tools to educate young and old alike, providing a means to keep history alive and inspire our visitors with these stories.

AHP's vision is bigger than the wonderful yet completely outdoor park that it currently is- AHP envisions becoming a world class aviation museum. This new facility will greatly expand its ability to share these aviators' stories and motivate future generations.

Along with the addition of aircraft and methodically landscaped grounds, AHP hosts numerous annual events, community partnerships, and a robust tour schedule bringing in groups from across the country. AHP has added six aircraft in the past ten years and has acquired the seventh aircraft to be unveiled at the 2019 Hangar Party. Representatives frequently give presentations for local interest groups, libraries, and clubs to further promote the stories of South Central Kentucky aviators.

The new museum complete with classroom spaces, state-of-the-art displays, interpretive exhibits, and hands-on activities will encourage youth to expand their interest in aviation, science, and engineering careers. This indoor facility will also allow AHP to preserve paper documents, textiles, small artifacts, and other artifacts better suited for a controlled environment. The construction plans include space for 6 to 8 additional aircraft surrounding the museum building.

Aviation Heritage Park's active board of directors is comprised of individuals who are experts in their fields, providing AHP with a wealth of diverse knowledge, talent, and backgrounds. This allows AHP to maintain low overhead and administrative costs while operating a professional organization.

The board of directors and staff are active in the community and have developed excellent working relationships with other local organizations and support from area businesses. They also maintain positive relationships with the Air Force and Navy.

AHP is financially responsible and positioned for success.

Starting out as just a single plane sitting in a field, Aviation Heritage Park has grown to one of the top ten attractions in Bowling Green, Kentucky. With six extraordinary aircraft meticulously restored (and plans for more) AHP is Bowling Green’s only attraction dedicated to aerospace technology.

Aviation Heritage Park is currently operating with zero debt and has undertaken a capital campaign to raise the necessary funds to construct a museum building. AHP has secured funds for the first two phases of construction and have broken ground on the new building while actively pursuing funds to complete the project.
