American Lyric Theater Center Inc

aka American Lyric Theater (Alt)   |   New York, NY   |  www.altnyc.org

Mission

American
Lyric Theater (ALT) was founded in 2005 by Lawrence Edelson to build a new body of operatic
repertoire for new audiences by nurturing composers and librettists, developing
sustainable artistic collaborations, and contributing new works to the national
canon. While many opera companies actively commission and perform new works,
ALT is the only company in the United States that also offers extensive, full
time mentorship for emerging operatic writers. ALT’s artistic staff, guest faculty,
and mentorship team includes some of the country’s leading operatic writers,
directors and dramaturges, including Mark Adamo, Anthony Davis,
Cori Ellison, William Hoffman, Michael Korie and Rhoda Levine.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Composer Librettist Development Program

By providing a structured mentorship program for young composers and librettists who have a passion for the lyric stage, ALT provides a supportive educational environment in which young artists can safely take risks while heightening their theatrical and musical skills under the guidance of professionals from the combined worlds of both theater and music. ALT collaborates with a number of New York City's prestigious non-profit performing arts organizations to provide these young artists with the most diverse and unique training opportunity available in the country. ALT's Composer / Librettist Development Program was launched in August 2007. The program has been designed to provide a unique professional mentorship and training environment where composers and librettists will study with artistic staff from ALT, as well as have the opportunity to observe the artistic processes at some of the country's finest opera and theater companies.
