What we aim to solve
After a natural disaster strikes, it can take years for communities to fully recover. This often means that families are left struggling for months with the daunting, and often expensive, cleanup tasks before them. These families fall into "gaps in service" in which they cannot (for any variety of reasons) complete the recovery tasks on their own. This is the problem All Hands and Hearts is working to solve; through volunteer and community engagement we aim to help families recover faster after natural disasters using our “smart response" strategy – by rebuilding in a disaster resilient way we prepare them for future events and, through the process, strengthen both volunteers and communities.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Mexico Earthquake Relief
In February 2017, two powerful earthquakes devastated parts of Mexico, killing hundreds, injuring thousands, and damaging or destroying over 5,000 schools, putting education at risk for thousands of students. To help another rural community provide a brighter future for its children through education, AHAH began work on its 26th earthquake damaged school in Pozo Guerra, Puebla. This project will involve the rebuilding of two new classroom buildings, new Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, a new kitchen and playground, two water harvesting systems in several adjacent towns, plus a variety of community focused training sessions including Disaster Risk Reduction training.
All Hands and Hearts and our partner organization, All Hands and Hearts Mexico, have committed to the long-term recovery of community schools across Mexico. To date, we've engaged 1,900+ volunteers who donated 13,504 hours, to complete 25 schools, and impact 4,700+ students.
Philippines Typhoon Relief
In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful tropical storms ever recorded, struck the island nation laying waste to 2,500 schools. In February 2023, All Hands and Hearts completed a program in which we built 10 transitional learning spaces in 6 different school communities in Southern Leyte. In August 2023, we began work on the St. Francis Elementary School in Tacloban - one of the many schools impacted by Typhoon Haiyan. In Tacloban, we will be building 2 new disaster resilient classrooms, repairing existing temporary learning structures, adding new Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, providing a drainage system to mitigate flooding and adding child-friendly outdoor spaces and Child Protection training.
All Hands and Hearts is committed to the long-term recovery of communities across the Philippines. To date, we've engaged 3,520+ volunteers who donated 500,000+ volunteer hours, to impact 50,993+ lives over a variety of school and community relief efforts.
Poland-Ukraine Crisis Response
The war in Ukraine created the largest refugee crisis in Europe since the second world war with many of those displaced crossing the border into Poland. Since October 2022, All Hands and Hearts has operated a program in Poland focused on repairing and retrofitting shelters for this vulnerable community and supporting other nonprofits serving their needs for food, clothing and other humanitarian goods.
To ensure the shelters are habitable and comfortable, our teams have taken on a range of activities including installing insulation and drywall to keep buildings warmer, installing windows to provide watertight structures protected from the elements, and constructing upgraded kitchen facilities and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities.
All Hands and Hearts is committed to an ongoing response to the needs of displaced Ukrainian people. To date, we've engaged 340 volunteers who donated 30,540 hours, to improve 22 shelter structures, and impact 14,464 vulnerable people.
Hurricane Ian Relief, USA
On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Lee County, Florida as a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 150 mph. Areas in Fort Myers experienced storm surges of up to 12 feet. Over 2.7 million people were without power in the immediate aftermath and many coastal areas and barrier islands were decimated, including the destruction of the Sanibel Causeway.
All Hands and Hearts is committed to the ongoing recovery of the community of Ft. Myers Florida. After more than one year on the ground, we remain one of the last nonprofits working in this space and there is so much more left to do. To date, we've engaged 591 volunteers who donated 28,198 hours, to provide 288 response and recovery scopes of work, and impact 395 vulnerable people.
Maui Wildfire Relief, USA
On August 8, 2023, a series of wildfires broke out across several drought stricken communities in west Maui. The largest of these wind-driven fires, swept through historic Lahaina town, prompting a sudden and chaotic evacuation with little warning, decimating Lahaina town, killing at least 98 people with dozens unaccounted for, making it the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. in more than a century. Many thousands of already-marginalized and low-income of citizens remain in limbo, displaced from their communities, homes, schools and jobs without a long-term plan.
All Hands and Hearts was asked to serve as a clearinghouse for local, spontaneous volunteer efforts almost immediately and we have since developed a strong relationship with the Napili Noho Community Resilience Hub supporting with knowledgeable volunteer manpower and helping to train team leads across inventory and operations management as well.
This is a developing response .

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We aim to respond in communities struck by natural disasters both effectively and efficiently, based on the unique recovery needs of that community. We shape our goals around the needs of the communities where we work, rebuilding safe, resilient schools, homes and other community infrastructure.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We take a variety of steps, and actively work to develop strategies, to make sure the work we do is impactful and resilient:
-We create an extremely productive and fulfilling experience for volunteers, giving us an ample supply of satisfied volunteers for future projects
- We draw all of our staff from our pool of volunteer alumni so that we have a knowledgeable and dedicated management group
-We encourage knowledge sharing and the development of operational best practices at all levels (from volunteers to management)
- We develop and integrate construction Standard Operating Procedures that help us make sure we are using resilient building materials and consistently effective methods on all projects
- By living within the affected community, and deploying large teams of volunteers directly engaged on a daily basis, we become known and trusted within the community
- We have an open and creative approach to partnering with other organizations by using our flexibility to fill gaps that might exist in other organizations' plans
- We are willing to respond to events anywhere in the world and take advantage of the high profile of major disaster events to capture both volunteer and donor interest
- We are transparent and tangible with proven success; giving faith to our donors who support our organization and faith to our extensive team of current and future volunteers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
-We Are All About Creative Problem Solving.
-We Focus on the Greatest Need.
-While there are almost always multiple communities heavily impacted by a natural disaster, the bulk of the relief efforts are usually focused in limited areas–often driven by media coverage. We, however, are deeply committed to seeking out the most under-served communities which are usually outside of the public eye. As a result, we are often the only organization serving in those communities where damage is as great as–or greater than–more publicized locations.
-We Collaborate with Local, National, and International Partners.
-All Hands and Hearts is committed to rebuilding the communities that we serve in the smartest way possible, which means that:
All Hands and Hearts doesn't just respond to the initial damage sustained from a natural disaster, we stay to help communities recover and rebuild. And while other organizations rush to scale, we practice perseverance. As such, we keep our eye on the long term.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have successfully operated 159 disaster programs in 26 countries with the help of over 66,000 volunteers from 144 volunteer nationalities. This has positively impacted more than 1.3 million lives, 336 schools and 119,000 children who are continuing their education in safe, resilient classrooms! We are eager to continue helping disaster-stricken communities and to see these impact numbers reach new heights.
