Reading Camp
Local area volunteers travel to Ghana to provide training for teachers and books for children in an effort to raise the reading level of children in small villages of Ghana.
Ghana comes to Sarasota
The program will connect a 2nd grade classroom in Sarasota with a 2nd grade classroom in Ghana. The children in Ghana will write notes to Sarasota children and send them a book they would read. The children in Sarasota will write back and send a book to the Ghanaian children. An arrangement will be made for an online video chat between the students and teachers. The purpose is to promote grade level reading and cultural understanding. The children in Ghana do not know our culture and our children might be surprised by their culture.

This metric is based upon 60 children from St. Paul's Primary School, Akramaman, Ghana who attended Reading Camp. The camp is intended for those children who struggle to read in English.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We aim to raise the literacy rate and provide children with the ability to read at grade level. Our goal for mothers is to provide education on their health and the health of their children.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy is to go village by village: providing reading camps with teacher education, providing health education workshops and filters for clean water.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have trained Ghanaian Teachers who can train more Ghanaian Teachers. We have a 3 year Reading Camp plan. All of the programs have been created. Each new village is given a volunteer team for 3 consecutive years. The team trains and supports a Reading Camp Ghanaian Staff. At the end of 3 years the village will run their own camp with support from Ghanaian Mothers' Hope. We currently have three villages in the system. We have partnered with Water With Blessings to provide water filters to village with clean water issues. We also partner with many nurses to provide health education workshops.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In the past 12 years Ghanaian Mothers' Hope has built 3 preschool, a primary school, a small hospital and a nurses residence. We have trained over 100 Ghanaian Teachers, more than 3,000 women have received health care information, given out more that 4,000 books, taught 800 children how to read, and more than 100 volunteers from many parts of the world have spent time volunteering in Ghana.
