HONORING THOSE WHO STAND FOR PEACE

Palm Harbor, FL   |  https://www.uspeacememorial.org

Mission

The US Peace Memorial Foundation honors Americans who stand for peace by publishing the "US Peace Registry," awarding the US Peace Prize, and fundraising for the US Peace Memorial in Washington, DC. These projects help move us toward a culture of peace by recognizing thoughtful and courageous Americans and U.S. organizations that have taken a public stand against one or more U.S. wars or have devoted themselves to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts. We celebrate these role models to inspire other Americans to speak out against war and to work for peace.

US Peace Prize

The US Peace Memorial Foundation awards the US Peace Prize to recognize and honor the most outstanding American antiwar leaders. These courageous individuals and organizations have publicly opposed military interventions such as invasion, occupation, production of weapons of mass destruction, use of weapons, threats of war, or other actions that compromise peace. Recipients include Ajamu Baraka, David Swanson, Ann Wright, Veterans for Peace, Kathy Kelly, CODEPINK Women for Peace, Chels ea Manning, Medea Benjamin, Noam Chomsky, Dennis Kucinich, and Cindy Sheehan.

By honoring these and other courageous role models, we hope to provide positive reinforcement to encourage their antiwar activism and inspire more Americans to speak out for peace and to work to end war. www.uspeaceprize.org

Population(s) Served

The "US Peace Registry" honors Americans who work for peace, recognizing and documenting the activities of U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and organizations that have publicly opposed militarization and military solutions to international problems. It is hoped that honoring these courageous role models and leaders will inspire new generations of Americans to speak out for peace and to work to end the hatred, ignorance, greed, and intolerance that lead to war.

The specific examples of actions/behaviors listed under each individual or organization are intended to provide ideas and guidance to others so that peace/antiwar behaviors can be replicated nationwide. It should stimulate new discussions, help people feel more comfortable speaking out, and lead to greater citizen involvement in antiwar activities. This compilation of strategies will be a valuable resource for all activists; students and scholars who study peace, protest, and civil disobedience; and practitioners engaged in research, teaching, action, and organization building.

Population(s) Served

The Foundation is fundraising and planning for the US Peace Memorial as a permanent national monument engraved with quotes from well-known Americans and equipped with electronic access to information about the people and organizations we honor.

Although it may take years to fund, design, and build the physical structure in our nation’s capital, all elements currently exist online at www.uspeacememorial.org/Quotes.htm, www.uspeaceprize.org, www.uspeacememorial.org/Registry.htm, and www.uspeacememorial.org/Organizations.htm. Until it is constructed, our website is the US Peace Memorial.

The monument will make it clear to our citizens that advocating for peaceful solutions to international problems and opposing war are honorable endeavors. A national monument to peacemakers can further raise awareness of these activities and help to change our cultural mindset so that it will no longer be acceptable to label those who speak out against war as un-American, anti-military, disloyal, or unpatriotic.

Just as you see military veterans at war monuments talking to young people, the US Peace Memorial will serve a similar function of uniting generations. Once the monument is built, it will be harder to disparage those who oppose war. When criticized, a person could say, “Don’t you know there is a national monument dedicated to people just like me?”
