What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The goal of Writing Coaches of Montana (WCM) is to help students write competently, think critically, and express themselves confidently. To do so, we leverage the diverse resources of our community to provide classroom support to public school teachers and students. There is broad consensus that more time needs to be devoted to writing, and that feedback at every stage of the writing process is essential to developing a skillset vital to college and workplace success. Decreasing budgets, growing class sizes, and staffing cutbacks, make this increasingly difficult for classroom teachers to provide unassisted. WCM’s efforts are directed at this problem.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Writing Coaches of Montana (WCM) provides individualized student instruction that helps bridge the gap between teacher resources and student needs. In doing so, WCM helps even the playing field for students without external support for their assignments: this may be particularly important for those facing socioeconomic or educational hardships.

WCM supports more than just writing. We encourage community engagement in education by connecting the talents of our community with the needs of teachers and students. Coaches from all walks of life provide focused attention on student writing and bring diverse perspective into the classroom. The resulting program has very low overhead, provides thousands of hours of individualized writing instruction, and builds the academic confidence of public school students.

Writing Coaches of Montana (WCM) trains community volunteers in tested approaches to improving student writing. Professional instructors train volunteers in a conferencing model that encourages students to discover their own solutions to writing problems. Teachers request the assistance of WCM coaches for assignments tied to core curriculum requirements, and coaches work individually during the class period with every student in the class. Volunteers coach two drafts of each paper, teaching writing as a process, and critical thinking and revision as essential to good writing.
