Combating Trafficking in Persons for the Removal of Organs (TPRO): Employing Technology & Field Work

In a growing number of countries, destitute individuals are the major or a significant source of organs used for transplants. This phenomenon demonstrates gross global inequalities and injustices and arguably involves cases of trafficking in persons for the removal of organs (TPRO). In March 2007, the World Health Organization estimated that illicit kidney removals for transplantation account for 5–10% of the approximately 65,000 kidney transplants performed annually throughout the world (WHO 2007). Nevertheless, the majority of the illicit organ removals from living donors remain unidentified and the victims of TPRO without assistance and remedies. The rigor of data on TPRO abuses needs to be improved in order to better understand the phenomenon of TPRO and to generate enhanced, meaningful, coordinated and appropriate responses to these crimes and to growing global tendencies towards the legalization of commercialism in organ transplantation.
The Coalition for Organ-Failure Solutions (COFS) proposes a three year project to expose and combat trafficking in persons for the removal of organs (TPRO), secure remedies for victims and prevent further abuses. The project will do this by following three main objectives: a) collecting standardized case data and related information on TPRO abuses worldwide via an online reporting and resource tool named XDOT designed to eXpose and Disrupt the Organ Trade; b) identifying, assisting, empowering and advocating the interests of victims of TPRO in Costa Rica, Egypt, India, Nepal and Germany; and c) appropriately sharing information with key stakeholders for the purpose of recognition of- and responses to- TPRO abuses.
