All programs are free of charge to District of Columbia Youth
After School Program: Provides academic reinforcement support and structured afternoon recreational activities. Operates from 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, offering activities that supplement daily classroom learning, and provides arts and recreational activities. We serve youth Kindegarten-6 Grade, number of students depend on funding ? served 20 students 2006/2007 school year
Homework Hour: Offers youth and families the support needed to complete homework assignments. Tutors and aides are made available to assist students between the hours of 3:00 pm ? 6:00 pm. We serve youth Kindergarten ? 9th Grade -
Mentoring Services: Through a contract with the DC Children & Family Services Agency (CSFA), YN provides mentoring services to at-risk youth. CFSA?s mission is to ?provide a variety of services to meet the developmental needs of children, prevent abuse, provide family life experiences through temporary or permanent placement, and preserve families in the District of Columbia.? We service youth 4 years ? 21 years old. Current service capacity is 55 youth
Summer Program: Fprovide a safe, structured environment from 8:30 am ? 4:30 pm, Monday ? Friday. The program offers activities to help children learn, assist students in retaining academic skills acquired during the previous school year, introduce students to new skills they will encounter at the next grade level, address selected social skills as well as provide a forum for recreational activities and summer fun. The program runs for six weeks, starting the last week in June and ending the first week in August. We serve youth Kindergarten ? 6 Grad. Have served 150 ? 540 students. Capacity depends on funding and space (space provided by the DC Public School System)
Gender-Specific Outreach: In 2005, YN launched two outreach programs, one geared toward girls and young women between the ages of 10 to 18 and the other geared toward boys and young men between the ages of 10 and 24. The mission of both programs is to provide a forum to share experiences and educate youth about the many needs, struggles, challenges, and situations that are prevalent in the lives of young women/young men. Classes, workshops, special events and other activities are held throughout the year. No limitations on service capacity
DC GAME (Girls Acquiring a Meaningful Experience) - part of a 2007 city-wide initiative to enhance the personal and professional development of young women of color? Youth Now! services up to 20 girls & teens.
Leadership Training
Using John Maxwell?s material, the 21 Indespensable Laws of Leadership, Teens & Young Adults go through an intensive 12-week training, discussing, learning and employing leadership principles.
Monday - Thursday
Communication Classes - focuses on developing public speaking skills
Saturdays - Once/month
Life Skills ? classes as scheduled ? length varies depending on subject matters. Past trainings have included Anger management, conflict resolution, credit management, health & nutrition and drug awareness
