Conservation Lands Program

In partnership with Canadian conservation organizations, government agencies and Indigenous communities, American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts (AF) conserves ecologically and culturally significant lands in Canada that are owned by US taxpayers. Landowners from the US own some of Canada's most environmentally sensitive, economically important, beloved and threatened landscapes. For example, approximately 25% of Nova Scotia's coastline is owned by non-Canadians, the majority of whom are from the US. All along the southern border of Canada, US ownership is concentrated on lakes, rivers, wetlands, marine coasts, islands and other geographies that have been popular vacation areas for many generations. Protecting these properties creates a necklace of ecological gems within the zone where Canada's population lives, works and plays.

AF is able to accomplish its mission through the ideal tax outcome for U. S. donors. Donations of land or conservation restrictions are eligible for both a U.S. income tax benefits (through its designation as publicly supported 501(c)(3) U.S. charitable organization) and relief from Canadian capital gains tax (through its designation as a prescribed donee under the Canadian Income Tax Act regulations).

AF also facilitates gifts of financial support for conservation in Canada by accepting donations of cash, securities and US real estate from US taxpayers who make recocmmendations for grants to qualified Canadian organizations.

Population(s) Served

American Friends facilitates gifts and purchases of ecologically significant land in Canada from US taxpayers. Through this legal mechanism American Friends makes land and water protection more strategic in landscapes where US taxpayers own key properties and/or large percentages of acreage such as the the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, the Greatn Lakes and the marine shorelines of the Maritime Provinces.
