Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

At the Y, we are committed to strengthening community. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. The Y is the nation's leading nonprofit committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Y nurtures the potential of every youth and teen, improves the community's health and well-being and provides opportunities to give back by supporting our neighbors.

The YMCA is community centered. For 16 years, we've been listening and responding to our community.

The YMCA brings people together. We connect people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs.

The YMCA nurtures potential. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. The Y has a local presence and national reach. We mobilize local communities to effect lasting and meaningful change.

Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our volunteers and staff to make a difference. Membership dues account for only half of our operating budget. We mobilize community stakeholders and organizations with a like mission to raise the balance of funds. We have done this successfully for the past 16 years. Our resources to accomplish our mission include a highly trained and qualified staff, a state of the art wellness center and track, a group exercise facility, an aquatics center, and events center with two additional classrooms, and a 20,000 sq' indoor athletic facility and fieldhouse. Our programs are evidence-based, many from the YMCA of the USA and others from other sources proven to be effective. We have broad formal and informal community collaborations in our programs.

We have come a long way, but there is yet much more work to be done. We have established seven successful chronic disease prevention and management programs and will add an additional programs as needed. We have strengthened out collaboration with local schools and now jointly run more programs, outside of school hours and offer After School programing at each Elementary School. Our high school has one of the highest graduation rate in the state of North Carolina. Jointly with the school system, we have a plan to greatly enhance and expand the after school and summer camp programs. Our drowning prevention program reaches every second grader and preschool child in the Avery County. Our youth soccer program has reached double the youth since we assumed responsibility for running it. Our summer camp is inclusive and partners with the National Inclusion Project in its design.

Policies and processes
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
