Cognitive Strategic Analysis

In 2008, Real Reason: designed and executed a series of six "language lab" sessions nationwide to prepare implementation of a cognitive strategic initiative to help people think more productively about sexuality through the conceptual framework of personality; identified two major cognitive models of human rights; assessed the state of the field in framing "government" toward surfacing the most democratic models; identified conceptual models used to understand the relationship between a pregnant woman and the "entity" carried; completed conceptual analysis of "accountability," "restoration," and "hope"; launched an initiative to understand cognitive models of the values of "responsibility," "autonomy," and "equality" in the context of reproductive rights; launched identification of innovative practices in the work of leading sexuality education reform efforts across the country.

Population(s) Served

In 2008: designed presentation templates to share Real Reason research findings with broader audiences throughout the country, including New York, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay Area: spoke at an invited workshop to share research findings on health and social justice; offered results from cognitive strategic analysis of sexuality and its conceptual models to communities of advocates for sex education and reproductive rights, in a series of five presentations; presented findings on human rights models to convened nonprofit legal advocates. Real Reason also engaged in exchanges with leaders and researchers at a variety of other nonprofit organizations to promote the role of cognitive linguistics in helping people think and act more democratically.

Population(s) Served

In 2008: continued development of a conceptual model of how social attitudes form and change; continued work to identify the ways in which cognitive foundations necessary for a thriving democracy -- including tolerance of ambiguity, flexibility in thinking, capacity for complexity, and understanding of interconnection -- can be strengthened through application of cognitive linguistic analysis to nonprofit advocate communications; identified ways in which stigma, shame, and judgmental attitudes and practices serve as cognitive obstacles to democratic thought and action.
