Kids E.A.T. 4 Life

Education + Activity = Total Health
Cooking with Gabby® sponsors
the GoodLife with Gabby™ E.A.T for Life Healthy Kids Initiative,
which makes a positive (healthful) impact on low-income children and their
families. This initiative develops programs and services that promote healthy
cooking, physical activity and nutrition and that combine animation, live
dance, public theater, and enrichment activities. Moreover, we work to raise
public awareness in low-income neighborhoods/communities about diet and
physical activities, emphasizing for example, healthy alternatives such as
fresh fruit, vegetables, and encouraging an active lifestyle.

EducationAt Cooking With
Gabby®, we believe that education is a key to demonstrating to children and
families the benefits of good eating habits and keeping fit. Far too often,
low-income neighborhoods/communities do not recognize the importance of healthy
food choices, preparing healthy and nutritious meals, and regular physical
activity.  Our interactive cooking classes teach children to prepare
healthy, nutritious meals.  Our programs involve recipes designed by Gabby
and her father, Steve Vasquez Sr., a successful chef and restaurateur.
The recipes are analyzed to ensure the highest dietary value by a
professional nutritionist. Families not only learn how to prepare the
recipes, but they also learn the history, nutrient content, and benefits of
each food item used.  By seeing, touching, smelling, tasting, and learning
about the foods they are more likely to retain the information and then make
healthy food choices when at the grocery store.  They are also given a
copy of the recipe, a list of locations where those foods can be bought, and a
bag of fresh fruits and vegetables to take home with them.
Activity In today’s sedentary
households, having youth enjoy physical activity on a regular basis assures a
good quality of life. At Cooking With Gabby, we believe in reaching children
through varied approaches. Our exercise program includes dance, yoga, and
basketball clinics.  The dance and yoga classes are taught by members of
the Gabby Dance Theater Group – the Gabby Krew.  This group has performed
across Southern California educating low-income youth at venues such as the
American Diabetes Association “Step Out”, The City of Burbank’s Health Fair, 112thStreet
Elementary, “Azusa Walks” educating the City of Azusa’s children and Featured
at the 2009 Karen Bass’s AD47 Well Mind, Well Body Health Fair, Los Angeles
Unified School District class room presentations, Vineyard After School
Program, Camp Jenesse (Jenesse Center), City of Los Angeles Sumner Night
Lights, and much more.  Our aim is to keep  children healthy and
strong kids by teaching, for example, fun and exciting dances and simple yoga
poses that can be done at home or can be shown off to friends.
We partner with
basketball clinics led by the Los Angeles Chapter – National Basketball Retired
Players Association.  Retired NBA players come out to the parks and teach
children the fundamentals of basketball and the importance of discipline.
For example, Lucius Allen and Sam Williams are excellent role models for
children and their families; they easily gain their respect and
admiration. We believe sports like basketball help children enjoy getting
fit and burning energy, and they teach them many other good qualities.
Total HealthBy addressing the
problem of obesity among children in low-income neighborhoods/communities,
Cooking With Gabby® aims to positively impact their dietary and physical
activity behaviors.
