Action for Animals

aka AFA   |   Seattle, WA   |  www.actionforanimals.com

Mission

Action for Animals is an educational organization that works to promote positive change in the ways people view and treat animals. Because every animal has the right to live his or her life free from oppression and exploitation, AFA promotes a vegan diet and lifestyle—not using animals for food, clothing, entertainment, research, trade, or any other objectifying purpose—and vegan activism as the best way to take action for animals.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

AFA places an emphasis on educational outreach. Each person who adopts a vegan diet saves the lives of an estimated 100 animals per year, which gives great value to getting information to people that will help them to make and stay loyal to this change. Realizing this, AFA works locally to distribute information throughout Seattle and at special events, and does more widespread outreach by having a booth on tours, sending out requested vegan starter packs, and networking with activists throughout the country.

Population(s) Served

Action for Animals places an emphasis on raising awareness by distributing information about veganism and animal rights at a grassroots level. This includes setting up information tables as well as leafleting at concerts, schools, festivals, and other busy events and locations; maintaining information racks at businesses; organizing peaceful demonstrations; and coordinating a variety of volunteer efforts.

Population(s) Served

Action for Animals recognizes that young people, especially teenagers, are passionate about making changes in their lives to help animals, both by becoming vegan and by getting involved in activism. Therefore, AFA focuses heavily on outreach to teenagers at concerts and other youth-oriented events. We also distribute information at schools and work with students to support and advise animal rights clubs at high schools and colleges.

Population(s) Served

AFA works with activists throughout the country to reach people with a message of respect for animals. Through this networking, we work to encourage people to be activists in their own communities and provide them the tools they need to be successful and effective. With our support, volunteers do outreach at festivals, conventions, trade shows, schools, concerts, churches, supermarkets, and more.

Population(s) Served

Action for Animals produces and mails out over 5,000 requested vegan starter packs per year to people all over the United States, Canada, and Australia. The packs contain information about why and how to live vegan (including animal rights, environmental, and health information), vegan recipes, information on vegan alternatives, and tips for helping people stay vegan. The free pack is available for request at www.veganstarterpack.com.
